Description

The hills of Western Massachusetts contain dark and terrible secrets. Strange families keep to themselves and practice rites of ancient and unspeakable black magic. These dreadful and unholy rituals give birth to a monstrosity beyond imagination, a monstrosity that threatens mankind itself! Can a brave handful of intrepid scholars hope to confront the otherwordly destruction of “The Dunwich Horror”?

H.P. Lovecraft's classic tale is dramatized and brought to life in the style of a 1930s radio drama, complete with a large cast of actors, original music, and thrilling sound effects.

Good performance

I enjoyed this rendition of The Dunwich Horror but felt(as I do with most of H.P.L.H.S performances) that it was a bit short and at times felt rushed. I know it is due to original release on Compact Disks but it doesnt negate my mild disappointment. This is not the best Audio play of The Dunwich Horror out there, but it will scratch the itch.

Dark Adventure's best, imo

I consider Dark Adventure Radio Theater's top 3 to be this, The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, and The Shadow over Innsmouth, with this one being at the top of the heap (I own all of their stuff). The thing I love about this one (and to a lesser extent, Dexter Ward), is it's sense of humor. The chatter of the townspeople is especially good, along with Wilbur Whately sticking out like a hilarious sore thumb in the town (and everywhere else he goes). If you're on the fence about purchasing any of the Dark Adventure stuff, I can pretty much guarantee you'll enjoy this one.

By the way, it used to be the only way to get these was directly through Lovecraft Society's website, and they were spendy. This stuff being on audible is just a steal. Actually, it really does sort of feel dirty. They deserve more for these quality productions.

Awesome Adaptation

This was a ton of fun with the acting and music quite reminiscent of the Creature Features of the 1950's. Professor Armitage sounds suitably academic; Wilbur Whatley appropriately booming and weird; the Dunwich yokels terrified amusedly out of their wits; and the Horror itself is awesomely squishy. I can't wait to investigate other Lovecraft "radio dramas" done by this group.

A Great Adaptation by the HPLHS

I think this would be a nice way of getting people into Lovecraft. Bit easier to understand for some than how Lovecraft writes.

Love the Radio Drama aspect!

I hope to become a lifetime member myself one day.

Best of them all

I love the HPLHS audio dramas and this one is the best. Performances are great and the narrative adaptation of the story is spot on.

Great Adaptation of One of My Favorites

This was the first episode of Dark Adventure Radio Theater I bought. I wanted to see if the quality of production was good enough to get any of the others. I have since bought every episode. These are so good and I've been listening to them non-stop. This episode does a great job of fleshing out scenes and adding characterization without ever becoming hoaky. Anyone who is a fan of the Suspense episode with Ronald Colman should love this as its a more complete version of the story with the same old time radio feel. Keep these coming!

Superb Production of the Classic

A superb performance of the H.P. Lovecraft story by the Historical Society. Expertly produced with a full cast, music and sound effects it immerses you in the story. Sounds just like an old time radio drama. Enjoy!
