Description
The Dying Hour introduces Jason Wade, a rookie crime reporter with the Seattle Mirror, a loner who grew up in the shadow of a brewery in one of the city's blue-collar neighborhoods. At the Seattle Mirror, he is competing for the single full-time job being offered through the paper's intense intern program. But unlike the program's other young reporters, who attended big name schools and worked at other big metro dailies, Wade put himself through community college, and lacks the same experience.
Wade struggles with his haunting past as he pursues the story of Karen Harding, a college student whose car was found abandoned on a lonely stretch of highway in the Pacific Northwest. How could this beloved young woman with the altruistic nature simply vanish? Wade battles mounting odds and cut-throat competition to unearth the truth behind Karen Harding's disturbing case. Her disappearance is a story he cannot give up, never realizing the toll it could exact from him. The Dying Hour is a bone-chilling, mesmerizing tale that introduces listeners to an all-too-human young hero who journeys into the darkest regions of the human heart to confront a nightmare.

A bit too gruesome
This is a very early book of Rick Mofina's and while it's a good book, I think he's become a far better and stronger writer since. As well, I found it a little too gruesome in parts and that detracted from my overall enjoyment. I also didn't completely buy the final tidy-up paragraphs. Narration was okay but sometimes a bit monotone. Overall, I liked it, but didn't love it.

Badly Needs A Remix
This early book from the Rick Mofina catalog follows 'Seattle Mirror' cub reporter Jason Wade as he investigates the disappearance of a college student. Mofina deftly examines Wade's personal ambitions & demons, while providing some of the best descriptions of an abduction & captivity from the POV of the victim - albeit nauseatingly graphic - that I have ever read (Lisa Gardner may be a little bit better).
Less fortunately, Mofina's dialogue is stilted and the character exposition is somewhat klunky. This book is far less polished than what I am accustomed to from this author.
As to presentation: The book is let down by a sibilant (actually whistling) reading by Paul Costanzo, too. Don't get me wrong.. his enunciation, cadence, tone, and voice-acting are commendable - but Tantor Audio sound engineers apparently didn't even try to soften Costanzo's squeaking delivery and clicking mouth noises (avoid earbuds on this one). The "fingernail-on-blackboard" effect is actually uncomfortable.
I might have continued with this series on the strength of the writing - not Mofina's best but definitely meritorious - but the straight-up *painful* delivery renders continuing this series of books unimaginable.
As it stands, 'The Dying Hour' rates 5.5 stars out of 10.. a serviceable distraction as a 'Plus' offering, but not worth a Credit.
ATTN PRODUCERS: I have listened to literally Thousands of Audiobooks and have NEVER had to access the Equalizer on my device before. Please fix this.

Problem with the audio track
At first I thought I was hearing things, but after listening to the background noise on the audio track again, there is a distinct sound of dripping water in the background. I found it very distracting when I was listening to the story.
