Description

The Ember War, book 1: The Earth is doomed. Humanity has a chance.

In the near future, an alien probe arrives on Earth with a pivotal mission: to determine if humanity has what it takes to survive the impending invasion by a merciless armada. The probe discovers Marc Ibarra, a young inventor who holds the key to a daring gambit that could save a fraction of Earth's population. Humanity's only chance lies with Ibarra's ability to keep a terrible secret and engineer the planet down the narrow path to survival. Earth will need a fleet. One with a hidden purpose. One strong enough to fight a battle against annihilation.

The Ember War is the first installment in an epic military sci-fi series. If you enjoyed A Hymn Before Battle by John Ringo and The Last Starship by Vaughn Heppner, then you'll love this explosive adventure with constant thrills and high stakes from beginning to end.

The Ruins of Anthalas, book 2: An ancient holocaust holds the key to humanity's survival.

Only a sliver of mankind survived the Xaros invasion. With Earth's defenses in ashes, nothing can stop the aliens' inevitable return. Hope arrives through a cryptic message from a long-lost alien race, promising the means to rebuild the shattered space fleet. Captain Valdar takes one of the last strike carriers, the Breitenfeld, and his shell-shocked crew on a desperate mission to the dead world. Unfortunately humans aren't the only power that received the ancient message....

The Ruins of Anthalas is the second book in The Ember War Saga, a military sci-fi space opera. If you like David Weber and John Ringo with a touch of Isaac Asimov, then you'll love this fast-paced and captivating adventure where humanity survives at the edge of a knife.

Great book that's a little odd at times

Overall loved the story, and the performance of Luke Daniels is great. There was times though I had to rewind because I had no idea what had just happened. Recommended!

Great military SciFi, worth the investment.

the first two books in the series are well worth the effort, the writing is as good as you would expect, and the performance is just excellent.

A great and stellar start!

All around great intro 2 pack to the series! Solid characters, flawed heroes, and overwhelming and terrifying foe! Lots of mystery, suspense and action. Can’t wait for next book - downloading now! Narrator was great as usual!

Sooo good! Excellent voicing! I can't find any faults with this one! Sometimes the following books in such series get dull but not with this series.

Astounding Attention To Technical Detail

The Editor's contention that this book reads like Tom Clancy writing about Space Navies is spot-on. The descriptions of military hardware (including weapons, armor, propulsion systems, and communications tech) are imaginative; tactics & strategies are intuitive and drip with authenticity; the pacing is breakneck and exciting; and the story is told with passable vocabulary and prose.
Richard Fox adheres to an annoying "Hollywood Central-Casting" stereotypical array of soldiers, scientists, business-people, and politicians - but if you can get past the unoriginality.. the characterization isn't too bad, either. The plots are straightforward adrenaline-fuelled/action-heavy silliness.. but - again - cinematic enough to allow readers to ignore how thin they are.

To whit:
• Book One ('The Ember War') sets up the scenario: the Earth has been told of the coming of a genocidal alien species (the "Xaros") that wipes out all that they encounter for some reason. But a remnant of humanity - the "embers" referenced in the series title - are hidden from the invaders by a forewarned genius billionaire industrialist visionary ('Marc Ibarra'). A very 'Battlestar Galactica' story matrix is lain down (military forces escorting civilians needed to rebuild the human race) for use in future books in the series. The overall story arc plot is imitative but capably executed - and the focus is on tech and action, anyway (well-scripted dogfights, space battles, and on-the-ground combat).
• Book Two ('The Ruins Of Anthalas') introduces alien allies and a mission to another (abandoned) Xaros-conquered planet - searching for valuable materials (an element called "Omnium") that could alter the trajectory of the wars. Again, the plot is thin.. but the focus is on military hardware, cloning technology, and combat, anyway. Fox also settles into a headshaking level of comfort with silly banter and "humorous" dialogue - complete with poop & pee jokes and clichéd sexual innuendo (the second book is faaaaaaar weaker than Book One).. but still provides a fun distraction.

Reader Luke Daniels is a little over-the-top in his voice-acting (and some accents are fairly weak) - but the narration is otherwise solidly above-average. Mr Daniels clearly enjoys the book and reads with a praiseworthy emotive tone, professional diction & pacing, and comfortable timbre & cadence. Podium Audio did very well to enlist Daniels on the project.

In toto, these 7/10 star books aren't "Hard" Science Fiction by any means, but rather fun rollercoaster-rides of space adventure. If you set your expectations low (no more than you would for a late-night Cartoon Network series screenplay, for example), they're a blast. I personally won't be continuing with the 'Ember Wars' series (the decrement in maturity from Book One to Book Two promises continued sophomoroc crudity).. but I can recommend this first duo, at least (especially if you can get them as part of the 'Plus' initiative).
