Description

not easy to not listen to
typically I listen to audio books in my quiet time, while I work, drive tractors , scrape out cattle pens. the first book in this series was head and shoulders above this one. The complexities of time travel are bad enough but when they confounded within a the confusing explanation presented in this book- make it readable, listenable, tolerable to a point I'll get the third book as it's free with my subscription. BUT it better be good, because I really don't think I'd use a credit to continue in the series
characters and the über macho military mindset and speeches are corny AF but I get it.

Wholesome
It was enjoyable and wholesome, despite the negativity she faced, she manages to stay positive and change the world through a seemingly genuine desire to do good

Meh
This didn’t intrigue me as much as the first book. Is he a mech expert or a expert pilot? I mean if the technology to upgrade a out of date fighter can let the main character take out 3 warships by himself…I expect the upgraded mech could be an unstoppable force... Seems like a filler book with only hints of interesting things. I don’t think I will continue with the next book.

Imitative But Entertaining
M.R. Forbes takes advantage of some well-known SciFi themes and futuristic Action-Adventure tropes to inform his book. Examples: the Technological "Singularity" (whereby AI becomes self-aware and decides to eradicate humanity); humans with neurological implants that are hacked & controlled; cloning technology; travel back through time to both pre-emptively attack humanity *and* give mankind a chance to change a bleak future; plasma rifle/rail-gun ground battles (complete with squads of Space Marines and giant combat mech-suits); setpiece Space Navy battles; etc..
Do not expect to read anything you haven't read before if you give this series a try.
Fortunately, Forbes is pretty good at each plot device he tries (delivering capable vocabulary/prose; providing mind's-eye vivid description; and pacing the action nicely) - and he does a very nice job weaving the elements into a cohesive story.
This book requires a significant suspension of disbelief in order to best enjoy it.. but it's worth it if you can manage it.
Reader Jeffrey Kafer isn't as effective as he was in Book One of the 'War Eternal' series (reading a little mechanically in this installment for some reason) - but his performance is still well above-average for the audiobook format.
'The End Of Liberty' rates a respectable 7.5 stars out of 10. Audible offered it as a 'Plus' selection.. which is great - because this often silly stereotype-loaded story would merit a Credit for any SciFi fan with appropriate expectations.
[Incidentally: The author's repeated comments on sex & lustful desire among characters feels oddly "tacked-on". It's not overwhelmingly distracting - but a genuine "takes-you-out-of-the-story" incongruence that readers should be aware of when considering if they want to give these books a try]

significantly better than the first
The protagonist has that irritating trait where he said he doesn't want to lead, then does. Other than that, way better than the first book. Only 1 female wants to sleep with him immediately after meeting him, and he actually makes decisions, rather than being a passenger in his owne story. The action is well laid out and exciting. Maybe a few too many last minute saves, but that's not a deal breaker.

I'm glad this was a plus selection.
A super AI with hyper advanced technology that uses caveman tactics. The humans aren't very smart either. Push ahead blindly and club everything that gets in the way. Always nearly out of ammo and then they shoot for another 5 chapters before winning the battle with a hand full of rounds left.
