Sixty-eight percent of Americans have dieted at some point in their lives. But upwards of 90 percent of people who intentionally lose weight gain it back within five years. And as many as 66 percent of people who embark on weight-loss efforts end up gaining more weight than they lost. If dieting is so clearly ineffective, why are we so obsessed with it? The culprit is diet culture, a system of beliefs that equates thinness to health and moral virtue, promotes weight loss as a means of attaining higher status, and demonizes certain ways of eating while elevating others.

Mainstream health science has let you down. Weight loss is not the key to health, diet and exercise are not effective weight-loss strategies, and fatness is not a death sentence. Body Respect debunks common myths about weight, including the misconceptions that BMI can accurately measure health, that fatness necessarily leads to disease, and that dieting will improve health. The authors also help make sense of how poverty and oppression - such as racism, homophobia, and classism - affect life opportunity, self-worth, and even influence metabolism.

Description
“The F*ck It Diet is not only hilarious, it is scientifically and medically sound. A must read for any chronic dieter.” (Christiane Northrup, MD, New York Times best-selling author of Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom)
From comedian and ex-diet junkie Caroline Dooner, an inspirational guide that will help you stop dieting, reboot your relationship with food, and regain your personal power.
Dieting doesn't work.
Not long term. In fact, our bodies are hardwired against it. But each time our diets fail, instead of considering that maybe our ridiculously low-carb diet is the problem, we wonder what’s wrong with us. Why can’t we stick to our simple plan of grapefruit and tuna fish? Why are we so hungry? What is wrong with us?
We berate ourselves for being lazy and weak, double down on our belief that losing weight is the key to our everlasting happiness, and resolve to do better tomorrow. But it’s time we called a spade a spade: Constantly trying to eat the smallest amount possible is a miserable way to live, and it isn’t even working. So f--k eating like that.
In The F*ck It Diet, Caroline Dooner tackles the inherent flaws of dieting and diet culture and offers listeners a counterintuitively simple path to healing their physical, emotional, and mental relationship with food. What’s the secret anti-diet? Eat. Whatever you want. Honor your appetite and listen to your hunger. Trust that your body knows what it is doing. Oh, and don’t forget to rest, breathe, and be kind to yourself while you’re at it.
Once you get yourself out of survival mode, it will become easier and easier to eat what your body really needs - a healthier relationship with food ultimately leads to a healthier you.
An ex-yo-yo dieter herself, Dooner knows how terrifying it can be to break free of the vicious cycle, but with her signature sharp humor and compassion, she shows listeners that a sustainable, easy relationship with food is possible.
Irreverent and empowering, The F*ck It Diet is call to arms for anyone who feels guilt or pain over food, weight, or their body. It’s time to give up the shame and start thriving. Welcome to the f--k it diet. Let’s eat.

Good ideas but repetitive and not for everyone
I really wanted to love this book but I didn't. It's really repetitive and glosses over a lot of information that would have been helpful. It felt a bit condescending at times and didn't have the substance I expected. If you're coming from a place of restriction and need help getting back to eating regularly, I think this would be helpful. It isn't helpful if you're an overeater or need help learning what to eat. It's fine to say "f*ck it, eat whatever you want when you're hungry" but if the only thing I want to eat is Pepsi and potato chips, I need more guidance than that.

I can’t buy into it...
I really wanted to love this book but I just can’t buy into it. I do believe that we are often quite hard on ourselves and some of us need to be gentler and love ourselves more, however, this book feels like a prescription for “who cares, fuck it, do what feels good” attitude. Unfortunately, life requires us to make decisions and choices that aren’t always fun and sometimes suck, example, putting down the cheetos and eating whole real foods. In my teens and early 20’s I lived my life just as this book suggests and I got sick, very sick....and very fat. I was diagnosed with PCOS and I had no option but to watch what I eat and exercise which cured me... so they say anyway, no more cysts, or hair loss or extreme fatigue or obesity.
That’s why I can’t buy into the message of this book in its entirety. Some points are valid and make sense but we still need to be accountable for our health... or not I guess, fuck it, right?

The Proof is in the Pudding
Having been a long time fan of Caroline, I preordered this book to support her, even though I feel like I am now a normal eater (thanks in large part to TFID podcast). Still, I couldn’t stop listening, and I definitely got some great ideas and takeaways, and felt armed with even more confidence that I’m doing the right thing for my body (and mind - this, you'll learn, is a big part of TFID approach).
My story is eerily similar to Caroline's. Having grown up with a well-intentioned mother, she would painstakingly prepare homemade bread, alfalfa sprouts and the like, and even plenty of desserts (made mostly with some sort of whole grain flour or veggie thrown in for an extra nutritional boost). She was and still is an amazing home cook. Yet, I felt something was amiss. I would beg for all of the fun stuff my friends seemed to have in abundance in their homes. And when I got my hands on them, I would gorge on them. Fast forward to my teen years, numerous other social factors, and a self conscious hormonal teen, and I started dieting. I can't get too far into it, but much like Caroline, I tried many diets, and eventually would label myself as orthorexic, feeling superior for eating so healthy and even evangelizing my pure approach to eating to others. But then, there I'd be, binging on the closest thing I could find to junk food in my house (cue chickpea brownies!), and feeling out of control. I wondered what was up with my emotional eating and felt ashamed of myself. I felt crazy around food. I knew that I couldn't live this way for the rest of my life. I started searching for a better way and discovered Intuitive Eating (IE) and Health at Every Size (HAES), eventually stumbling upon TFID podcast.
I feel like this is a book that could help literally everyone I know. We are so entrenched in diet culture. Even those more "normal eaters" I know have weird hang ups and beliefs around eating. I feel like Caroline does a great job of making anti-diet easy and approachable, but in the most non-judgemental way possible. There is so much judgement already, and it could be easy to get as . She reminds us to be compassionate with others, and ourselves. We've all been there.
If you've been exploring the IE approach, and it doesn't feel quite right for you (some might find it overwhelming and turn the principles into rules, therefore feel like it's another diet), Caroline's approach is even more simple - that is - allow all food. If you're hungry eat. If you're not hungry but want to eat, you should do that too. When I reflect back on my approach, I really did what Caroline recommended. I didn't stick exactly to the IE principles (I found the hunger fullness scale annoying, although I think many people do like to use the scale).
TFID approach works. Yes, I did gain weight. Yes, I did eat a lot in the beginning. But, the sooner that I surrendered and trusted my body, the sooner I found peace around food. I can now confidently say that I can have my former trigger foods in the house and they get stale. I never feel bad or repent on what I eat. Although I don't weigh myself, I'm confident that I'm near my set point healthy weight. I don't want to say this will happen to everyone, but I went up a few pant sizes, and slowly notice my pants feeling a little looser lately. This entire process took about 8 months for me. If you want to feel free around food, give this book a read or listen. There is enough science and logic to satisfy any skeptic and Carolne's delivery will keep anyone from yawning. Just eat the damn pudding already!

I cannot believe this actually got published
This book is terrible. In summary, eat however you want, feel good about being overweight because it's actually healthier, eating poorly is perfectly fine, no junk food is unhealthy, so be happy at whatever weight you wind up being. Although I agree you should feel good about yourself no matter what weight you are, and that yo-yo dieting is bad, absolutely nothing else in this book makes sense. Utterly terrible.

Not A Great Resource
This book is essentially “intuitive eating” with an attitude and irrational premises. Caroline Dooner is not a credible expert on eating disorders, body positivity, or health. Her voice was also patronizing at times. Please just pick up the OG “Intuitive Eating” book for real (health conscious) advice without a socio-political slant.

Last Diet Book You'll Ever Need to Read
Being a 73 year old woman who has been on diets since I was six, I can say categorically that this is the sanest, funniest, factual, sensible and entertainingly humorous book I have ever encountered on the subject of food. I have been on every diet there is and read almost every book. Let me save you the trouble, this is the only book any of us will ever need. This book sets the madness of diet culture on its end in the most charming and powerful way. Caroline's logic and presentation lays out a way of living and eating that makes inarguable sense. I am on my second listen because there is so much wisdom and have downloaded the book to my kindle to do the exercises. Reading it just once changed my relationship to food and continues to do so every day. I am now happy, not obsessed or stressed over food because this book has shown me the only way to live. Thank you Caroline from the bottom of my heart!

Read this is you want to balloon
I would give zero stars if it would let me! This women should not be given a book deal. The advice in the book is VERY careless and irresponsible. She plays in the emotions of those battling obesity and creates an atmosphere of hopelessness for self improvement. She bashes doctor's and gives very scary advice. This book is dangerous and completely irresponsible.

Well-written and excellently narrated!
A wonderful anti-diet manifesto narrated with the beautiful tones of the author herself! This was a true pleasure to listen to, as the author's expressive voice accurately conveys the love, humor, and biting wit of the book itself. I also appreciated a few small writing changes made specifically for the audible version ie "it may make sense for you to listen to this book twice" instead of "read this book twice," as it showed an attention to detail that I appreciate!
This book is a wonderful feminist and anti-'Big Diet' narrative that delves into freedom of personal choice and all the other issues tied to dieting. I would highly recommend it.

Extremely helpful.
I’ve struggled a lot with an eating disorder for about ten years now. I was always looking at all these different diets trying to lose weight and starving myself, only to slip up and then binge. I’d feel terrible about myself then began the vicious cycle again and again and AGAIN. This book brought out a lot of experiences and emotions and helped me see my relationship with food and eating in a new light. I’m not miraculously healed, but this book really inspired me to take a much needed step in the right direction. She provides a lot of examples and “have you ever..?” And I could relate to all of it. Knowing that there’s people out there who have felt the same and gotten through it really helps. For so long, I felt like a failure because the diets that worked for what seems like everyone in this world didn’t work for me. This book helped me realize there’s more to food than diets. Truly an inspirational book and will definitely be rereading. Truly thankful to have come across this book!!

Understanding our Relationship with food
I thought it was a nice read and the narrator was easy to understand. However, the book does not explain very well how to lose weight or keep healthy it just helps people accept their relationship with and does not offer much guidance.

This is for everyone.
This book is groundbreaking, and I don’t say that lightly. As someone who has been consumed (no pun intended) with food/restriction/dieting/thinness/health my entire life, reading this book was like a good hard therapy session. I want to buy a copy for everyone I know.
