Description
Just days before spring break, Neil Kearney is set to fly across the country with his childhood friend (and current friend-with-benefits) Josh, to attend his brother's wedding—until Josh tells Neil that he's in love with him and Neil doesn't return the sentiment.
With Josh still attending the wedding, Neil needs to find a new date to bring along. And, almost against his will, roommate Wyatt is drafted.
At first, Wyatt (correctly) thinks Neil is acting like a jerk. But when they get to LA, Wyatt sees a little more of where it's coming from. Slowly, Neil and Wyatt begin to understand one another… and maybe, just maybe, fall in love for the first time…

It Was Okay
Content Warning: underage drinking, mentions of neglectful parenting, mentions of surgery, transphobia, homophobia, indirect dead naming (not said on page, but alluded to), mentions of past sexual relationship, fade to black sex scene, passing of father, passing of grandfather
This is one of those books that I wish I liked more than I actually did. I've enjoyed both of Mason Deaver's other books 10 times more than I enjoyed this one. For starters, as someone planning a wedding, I would be PISSED if one of the GROOMSMEN left BEFORE THE CEREMONY.
Beyond that, it just didn't have the right kind of pacing. The characters go from tolerating one another to love in less than a week! I know as a teenager I had some mighty crushes, but this is depicted as the "lasting forever" and people "noticing it right away" when they barely knew anything about one another. This didn't convince me as well as The Proposal did.
And Neil was terrible. Rewrite this from Wyatt's perspective and it's a 5 star book because Wyatt is a great character, but Neil was fucking insufferable. So full of himself and pretentious. Also In N Out is not THAT great lol
But the representation was fantastic and I loved the secondary characters so much. I thought all the conversations around gender identity, sexual orientation, and experiences that people have were well done (as always) and really great.
I think I would have preferred to read other Mason Deaver books again before I read this one.
