can't get this book out of my head

The plot revolves around three characters: First Sister, a woman whose presence is meant to comfort soldiers in war, Lito, a soldier tasked with eliminating a powerful target connected to First Sister, and Hiro, the missing warrior with shocking secrets tying them all together.
The characters are the core of the story. First Sister is woefully naive and emotional, and I didn't quite know what to make of her at times. I found it hard to connect with her because she wasn't as active as I'd hope she might be. Lito was my favourite, a man questioning everything he knows as he's given an impossible task to not only assassinate one of the most powerful people in the galaxy, but assassinate his former partner, too. Hiro has charisma and charm, but I still struggled to connect with them. Part of it could be because the relationships all these characters have to each other, or certain pairings at least, felt rushed. I didn't have as much context as I would like to fully believe their bonds.
That's likely my biggest critique: The book was quite heavy on emotion. First Sister was constantly crying and there was a little too much internal thought and character drama for me to be engaged. That said, the plot writing and plot were solid and the action scenes were fun. The world building is immersive and fresh, drawing from some familiar inspirations like DUNE and RED RISING, while highlighting the strength of its LGBTQIA+ characters.
While I didn't love this book quite as much as I would've liked, it is a well written book with drama, excitement, and multiple wild twists at the end. Perfect for anyone looking for a queer sci fi story to be entertained by!
