I can not recommend this book enough. It entirely changed the way I view the wars in the middle east. Truly insightful and captivating anecdotes that string together into an amazing story. A seemingly unbiased view of all sides of a conflict that really hammers home the fact that this is about real people and the things they have endured. Very heavy subject matter and not for the faint of heart.

This is a hard but important book to get through. Filkins matter-of-factly reports terrible acts of violence and destruction in Afghanistan under the Taliban (the first time), Manhattan immediately after the 9/11 attacks, and during the US occupation of Iraq and then country’s descent into bloody insurgency and anarchy. Immersive accounts of suicide bombings, US military operations and firefights, ambushes and roadside bombs, kidnappings, videotaped beheadings, torture. A horrifying and honest look at the brutality and pathos of war, the waste of lives and potential and trust and money, political posturing and and lies and hypocrisy during the attempts to rebuild Iraq, and incredible individual acts of integrity and bravery.

Things reach a surreal peak in Filkins going for runs alone in the streets of Baghdad outside of the protected Green Zone, evading insurgents and criminal kidnapping gangs, IEDs, wild dogs, armed checkpoints. He must have realized that this was suicidal, but he was too numb to stop. Reminded me of Michael Herr’s excellent Dispatches from the Vietnam War.
