Description

Sara Blaedel--Denmark's queen of crime--brings her number-one best-seller The Forgotten Girls to North America.

Four days later Louise Rick still has no answers.

The body of an unidentified woman is discovered in a local forest. A large, unique scar on one side of her face should make the identification easy, but nobody has reported her missing. As the new commander of the Missing Persons Department, Louise risks involving the media by releasing a photo of the victim, hoping to find someone who knew her.

Louise's gamble pays off: an older woman phones to say she recognizes the woman as Lisemette, a child she once cared for in the state mental institution many years ago. Lisemette, like the other children in the institution, was abandoned by her family and branded a "forgotten girl". But Louise soon discovers something more disturbing: Lisemette had a twin, and both girls were issued death certificates more than 30 years ago.

Aided by her friend, journalist Camilla Lind, Louise finds that the investigation takes a surprising and unsettling turn when it brings her closer to her childhood home. And as she uncovers more crimes that were committed--and hidden--in the forest, she is forced to confront a terrible link to her own past that has been carefully concealed.

Ce que les critiques disent

"Sara Blaedel is a force to be reckoned with. Everyone keeps talking about the 'trend' in crime writers--Scandinavian, German, Russian. Blaedel is no trend. She's a remarkable crime writer who time and again delivers a solid, engaging story that any reader in the world can enjoy." (Karin Slaughter)
" The Forgotten Girls is without doubt the best the author has delivered so far.... [S]trikingly well done.... [T]he chances are good that The Forgotten Girls will become your favorite crime novel for a long time to come." ( Børsen, Denmark)
"Sara Blædel is at the top of her game. Louise Rick is a character who will have readers coming back for more." (Camilla Läckberg)

Disappointing

This book came highly suggested in a list of best Nordic noir books of 2017 and it doesn’t measure up. Parts of the story were interesting but it frequently fell into tired tropes of female protagonists. I won’t spoil it but it’s hardly original. I also couldn’t shake the feeling that her new partner was a washed up Harry Hole, which was a bit distracting. Several plot lines had no purpose or follow through such as the one with the protagonist’s best friend who decided to solve a mystery that is the central plot to get away from relationship troubles. Not only does she not solve it, get her journalist job back or play any role at all in the final outcome, she spends the rest of the story being a ridiculous Bechtel Test case in point. No development at all on the main character’s sidekick and no reason his relationship with her so dramatically advances.

The narrator read these Danish characters and place names in regional American accents - several Danish cops with southern drawls, one police staff who had a ridiculous 1950s American secretary voice and a character with an Irish accent and a clearly Danish history. Really unfortunate.

Bad Casting/Direction

The narrator is a good enough performer, but she was the wrong choice for this book. Accents from the American South and Midwest were distracting in a book set in Denmark.

Not great

I finished this but it was rough. I didn't really get into the story until near the end. The way the murder was investigated seemed disjointed and unrealistic to me and some of the sub plots were distracting and seemed unnecessary.
I read in other reviews that the accents were distracting and at first I thought those people were just being negative, but they truly were distracting, as the narrator would start an accent for a character and be inconsistent with it, making it confusing.
All that being said the ending was a good twist albeit rather rushed feeling but I don't know if it was good enough to listen to the whole book.
I wouldn't recommend this title.

A really good listen but heartrending content.

A really good listen but heartrending content which I would imagine has more reality than fiction with respect to past abused of the mentally individuals who have no protection against heartless caregivers.

Truly terrible

Lame dialogue, terrible narration with inexplicable and poorly executed accents. Embarrassing. To be fair, I did finish it-- the story kept me just interested enough. But I did not enjoy this book or this narrator and would not recommend either one.

Girls interrupted

I am reviewing the Audible audio version of this book. This is a police procedural crime novel set in Denmark. Great! So, why would the publisher select a reader who has no concept of the glottal stops/overall tone of the Danish language, can't properly pronounce the names and places, and often uses a RIDICULOUS and badly-executed Scottish(?) Irish(?) Country(?) accent for some of the characters????! I found that to be incredibly annoying! Audio issues aside, there were times that the story was wonderfully interesting, delving deep into a mystery about missing persons, savage crimes, and a long-closed home for the mentally disabled. However, these installments of interest were often interrupted by boring gas about some friend of the main character and her wedding planning. (Can you say, "fast forward"???) The jury is still out on whether I'll seek out other titles by this author.

Excellent

A truly enjoyable listen. Gripping from the very beginning. Nuanced and likable characters. So glad to have discovered this author.

well-told story, felt very connected to characters

creepy story, sad, well-told! listened to it twice all the way through without noticing, other than it sounding oddly familiar, crazy how that happens.

Great read

I really liked the book, it wasn't as suspenseful as I was hoping, but was a different storyline, which I liked a lot. A must read!

The way names are pronounced

This is a good story but it is really irritating that names of people and places are pronounced completely wrong. When doing an English translation the narrator should be instructed in how to pronounce the names. It is so bad that it becomes a distraction when listening
