Description

In this pioneering examination of the scientific principles behind success, a leading researcher reveals the surprising ways in which we can turn achievement into success.

Too often, accomplishment does not equate to success. We did the work but didn't get the promotion; we played hard but weren't recognized; we had the idea but didn't get the credit. We've always been told that talent and a strong work ethic are the key to getting ahead, but in today's world, these efforts rarely translate into tangible results. Recognizing this disconnect, Laszlo Barabasi, one of the world's leading experts on the science of networks, uncovers what success really is: a collective phenomenon based on the thoughts and praise of those around you.

In The Formula, Barabasi highlights the vital important of community respect and appreciation when connecting performance to recognition - the elusive link between performance and success. By leveraging the power of big data and historic case studies, Barabasi reveals the unspoken rules behind who truly gets ahead and why and outlines the 12 laws that govern this phenomenon and how we can use them to our own advantage.

Unveiling the scientific principles that drive success, this trailblazing audiobook offers a new understanding of the very foundation of how people excel in today's society.

Ce que les critiques disent

"This is not just an important but an imperative project: to approach the problem of randomness and success using the state of the art scientific arsenal we have. Barabasi is the person." (Nassim Nicholas Taleb, author of the New York Times best-selling The Black Swan and distinguished professor of risk engineering at NYU)

"Laszlo Barabasi is an extraordinary scientist who has enjoyed great success. He brings to bear all of his capacity as the former to understand the latter - to our great benefit. Writing in a lively fashion, he illuminates broad principles that explain how people in all fields - from entrepreneurs to scientists to athletes to artists - achieve success. The insights are novel and useful, and backed not just by vivid stories, but also by the sorts of detailed and inventive scientific analyses, plainly explained, for which Barabasi is rightly famous." (Nicholas Christakis, coauthor of Connected and the Sol Goldman Family professor of social and natural science at Yale University)

"Barabasi will indelibly transform the way we all think about success." (Alex Pentland, author of Social Physics and Toshiba professor at MIT)

Great read, but Siri reads as well as the Audible

Intriguing book with many revelations which are very unexpected. Really helps frame thoughts and strategy regarding how to be successful.
I was very disappointed in the audible reader though, and compared it to just letting Siri read the book, and found it to be almost the same, with Siri possibly better. The audible version has no discernable inflexion or sense that he understands the words he’s reading, which deprives the words of texture and comprehension.

great story--annoying use of inclusive language

Instead of just using "he" or plural "they," the author switches between different conventions--extremely annoying!

In the name of preferential attachment...

Great listen that elicited multiple "stay in your car listening until this section is over" moments. Some of the case studies cited were compelling enough for my future reference that I picked up a physical copy of the book as well.

Really balanced understanding of success

Outstanding balance of understanding of role networks, ideas and all of us play in what we call success.

Insightful but it could have been much shorter

This book shares a very valuable insight: performance is not equal to success. Performance is your ability to do the job but success is the recognition people award you if they benefit from and recognize your performance. In other words, if you're very good at what you do but nobody benefits from it or people don't find out about your work, you can't become successful.

There are many valuable insights like this scattered in the book. But that's precisely what I didn't like. The insights are scattered between long stories and examples that didn't have to be included. The author simply takes too long to get to the point, probably because he wanted the book to have a certain length.

Anyway, overall it's a good audiobook and it teaches valuable lessons.

just okay.

Data is scarce and many examples are anecdotal. I wish there was more practical application.
