Lawrence Block writes a genuine POS of a protagonist. Florida P.I. 'Doak Miller' is a jaded rutting misanthropist who falls for a woman aiming to eliminate her husband. In the meantime, he keeps an X-rated f**k-buddy relationship with his married realtor, sodomizes one-night-stand partners at will, fantasizes about choking/raping acquaintances, and seduces pregnant clients' wives.. all described with explicit glee.
I am unsure if Block intends the character as an anti-hero.. because Doak is frankly insupportable. The book is well-written and gritty-gritty-gritty, but I was put off by the uncomfortably sketchy dramatis personae and the unnecessarily XXX storytelling.

As to presentation: Mike Dennis demonstrates solidly professional reading skills with "acceptable" voice-acting.. but nothing particularly special. Furthermore, Recorded Books Inc. editors leave uncomfortably long silences between chapters. The production values are occasionally lazy.

Altogether, I rate 'The Girl With The Deep Blue Eyes' 5/10 stars. Even beyond the near-pornographic sentiments, the book screams "average" as an entry into the Noir Crime Thriller genre. When it leaves the 'Plus' catalog, Pass.
