À propos de cet audio

Brought to you by Penguin.

Many years have passed since three Teblor warriors brought carnage and chaos to the small lakeside settlement of Silver Lake. While the town has recovered, the legacy of that past horror remains, even if the Teblor tribes of the north no longer venture into the southlands. One of those three, Karsa Orlong, is now deemed to be a god, albeit an indifferent one. In truth, many new cults and religions have emerged across the Malazan world, including those who worship Coltaine, the Black-Winged God, and - popular among the Empire's soldiery - followers of the cult of Iskar Jarak, Guardian of the Dead.

A legion of Malazan marines is on the march towards Silver Lake, responding to intelligence that indicates the tribes beyond the border are stirring. The marines aren't quite sure what they're going to be facing, but, while the Malazan military has evolved and these are not the marines of old, one thing hasn't changed: they'll handle whatever comes at them. Or die trying.

Meanwhile, in the high mountains, where dwell the tribes of the Teblor, a new warleader has risen. Scarred by the deeds of Karsa Orlong, he intends to confront his god, even if he has to cut a bloody path through the Malazan Empire to do it. Higher in the mountains, a new threat has emerged, and now the Teblor are running out of time.

The long feared invasion is about to begin. And this time it won't be three simple warriors. This time thousands are poised to flood the lands of the south. And in their way, a single legion of Malazan marines....

It seems the past is about to revisit Silver Lake, and that is never a good thing....

Emma Gregory's narration brings so much emotion and life into the characters, and makes each voice sound unique, so much so that it feels like a show with multiple actors.

I read along with the book as I listened, and her voice work felt like it elevated and improved the story so much for me, and considering how much I love the Malazan books and its writing, that was something I didn't think a voice actor could do.

As for the book itself, this might honestly be one of Steven Erikson's best works. The story is about half the length of previous Malazan novels, but the story doesn't feel any lesser for it. Instead it feels much more focused, while still giving time to become invested in the character arcs and deliver a powerful, moving ending.

While this book could technically be read on its own, as it features almost entirely new characters, I would not recommend it. It builds and contrasts on the themes from the original series, and much of this would lost on readers new to the series.

Overall, 10/10 book, and a 10/10 narration. Can't wait for the next one!

Outstanding narration and deeply moving story

When I read the primary series Karsa was my favourite character. So when they announced this series I had high expectations.

This is a return to the style of his first 5 books and the story is fantastic although not what I was expecting and that’s good. This is a book driven with a positive outlook on “humanity” but with that tone you saw around the groups of characters you loved like the Bridgeburnerss or Stormy and crew.

Emma did an amazing job giving voice to the characters.

Worth the purchase!!

Amazing story. Narration would be a lot better if she didn't try so hard to make the characters' voices sound different.

Fabulous story poorly narrated

It never gets old -- Malazan soldiers of various shapes and sizes with a range of believable and interesting personalities, and backstories, always shooting the shit, bantering, and bickering. I can definitely tell that Erikson definitely had a lot of fun writing Stillwater -- she turned out to be one of my favorites in this one. Did I mention their humanity? The feels. Oh, and the plot's good too.

Damn it was well worth it. I actually really like her accents and how distinct each character is. Also her rendition of a young boy is *chefs kiss*. Wonderful narration and I hope she sticks around for the next ones. As for the content, its a must read for any Malazan fan. Im looking forward to the next one.

Took me awhile to warm to the narrator, but...

The story reads like a poem with so much aesthetic beauty. The narrator is equally amazing with how she voices and portrays a wide array of characters! She’s definitely the best in the business and makes the story come to life by the way she reads that I had to buy the hard copy just to reread the prose over and over!

Poetic with carefully constructed prose!

Probably the most accessible Erikson book yet. easy to follow compared to some of the narrative threads in Book of the Malazan. Emma Gregory's narration is easily the best I've heard, switches between male and female characters superbly. Excited to hear from Karsa in a future book.

Fantastic Narration

Erickson rises to the task again. No better plea for compassion has he come up with. This story is very real. It will break your heart and leave you wanting more. Just finished it for the second time after re reading the main series. Fits very well into the series. Narration is great. Highly recommend it.
