This is one secret he’s keeping to himself. And who would believe him anyway?
Farin, the gravedigger’s son, lives in the medieval village of Heap. The 18-year-old is an outsider who is bullied and ostracized by the villagers. His father has succumbed to a life of drinking, and the young man has no option but to take over the job of gravedigger.
But Farin’s life takes a dramatic twist when the village witch dies. As he prepares her for burial, he finds an amulet hanging around her neck, and he can’t resist trying it on....

• the adventures of a hardluck, bullied, and ostracized medieval teenager ('Farin') who inadvertantly gets semi-possessed by a philosophical sarcastic daemon he names 'Stinker';
• and a magically-gifted abused orphan "Waif Girl" in a distant city (named 'Aross') who may be a reincarnated prophetess.
The mysterious villainous cult plaguing the kingdom (called "The Necorers") is interesting but not particularly worrying, Feuerbach's feudal lord/peasantry setting is well-described but unoriginal, and the tales are paced nicely with well-scripted combat.. but are fairly pedestrian.
The real strength of the book is an admirably lighthearted (and often laugh-out-loud funny) mood that reminded me simultaneously of intellectually clever 'Monty Python' humor and the satirical writing of Douglas ('Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy') Adams.
Contributing to the raucous fun delivered by this book is brilliantly deadpan narration by Gildart Jackson. The reader's sense of comedic timing and immediate understanding of the author's intent results in a spot-on cerebrally humorous tone - building on commendable diction, timbre, and cadence [it's too bad that his chosen character voices are often indistinguishable and he reads much too slowly (listen at 1.20X)]..
Regardless, Jackson frequently reminded me of the brilliant Stephen Fry.
This 8/10 star audiobook definitely has deficiencies, but is good enough to prompt me to go on with the series. Even were Audible to ask for a Credit (it's a 'Plus' selection at the moment), it would be worth it.
Incredibly Entertaining

despite this the twists and the unexpected events are genuinely shocking and if you have good foresight sometimes you can even deuce things before the protagonist. granted I've been wrong sometimes and when answer is revealed I go, "why didn't I think of that!" the book captivating. I'll definitely be reading the next 3 volumes
outstanding story
