Histoire
It’s been a minute—or five years—since Jordan Vargas last saw his college friends, and twenty-eight years since their graduation from Berkeley when their adult lives officially began. Now Jordan, Jordy, Naomi, Craig, and Marielle find themselves at the brink of a new decade, with all the responsibilities of adulthood, yet no closer to having their lives figured out. Though not for a lack of trying. Over the years they’ve reunited in Big Sur to honor a decades-old pact to throw each other living “funerals,” celebrations to remind themselves that life is worth living.

After years of trying to make it as a writer in 1990s New York City, James Smale finally sells his novel to an editor at a major publishing house: none other than Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Jackie - or Mrs. Onassis, as she's known in the office - has fallen in love with James' candidly autobiographical novel, one that exposes his own dysfunctional family. But when the book's forthcoming publication threatens to unravel already fragile relationships, both within his family and with his partner, James finds that he can't bring himself to finish the manuscript.

Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

When you listen to Lily and the Octopus, you will be taken on an unforgettable ride. The magic of this novel is in the listening, and we don't want to spoil it by giving away too many details. We can tell you that this is a story about that special someone: the one you trust, the one you can't live without. For Ted Flask, that someone special is his aging companion, Lily, who happens to be a dog.

In this novel of the glittering and gritty Jazz Age, a young aspiring photographer named Dorothea Lange arrives in San Francisco in 1918. As a newcomer - and naïve one at that - Dorothea is grateful for the fast friendship of Caroline Lee, a vivacious, straight-talking Chinese American with a complicated past, who introduces Dorothea to Monkey Block, an artists’ colony and the bohemian heart of the city. Dazzled by Caroline and her friends, Dorothea is catapulted into a heady new world of freedom, art, and politics.

Elizabeth's mother was working as a nightclub hostess on US-occupied Okinawa when she met the American soldier who would become her husband. The language barrier and power imbalance that defined their early relationship followed them to the predominantly white, upstate New York suburb where they moved to raise their only daughter. There, Elizabeth grew up with the trappings of a typical American childhood and adolescence. Yet even though she felt almost no connection to her mother's distant home, she also felt out of place among her peers.

Being a hit man has its perks, but I never thought getting an accidental mooning by an attractive PI while he’s caught on a fence would be one of them. While it’s not exactly love at first sight, he’s captured my interest and won’t let go. Suddenly, I find myself caught in a game of cat and mouse, determined to attract the attention of Jackson, the PI who should be my enemy. He pretends like he’s not flattered by my flowers and the mentions of my totally-not-fictitious blow-up doll, Randy (or was it Dandy?), but I know better.

Description
Winner of the Thurber Prize for American Humor
National Bestseller • Wall Street Journal Bestseller • USA Today Bestseller
An NPR Book of the Year
Finalist for the 2021 Goodreads Choice Awards
From the bestselling author of Lily and the Octopus and The Editor comes a warm and deeply funny novel about a once-famous gay sitcom star whose unexpected family tragedy leaves him with his niece and nephew for the summer.
Patrick, or Gay Uncle Patrick (GUP, for short), has always loved his niece, Maisie, and nephew, Grant. That is, he loves spending time with them when they come out to Palm Springs for weeklong visits, or when he heads home to Connecticut for the holidays. But in terms of caretaking and relating to two children, no matter how adorable, Patrick is, honestly, overwhelmed.
So when tragedy strikes and Maisie and Grant lose their mother and Patrick's brother has a health crisis of his own, Patrick finds himself suddenly taking on the role of primary guardian. Despite having a set of "Guncle Rules" ready to go, Patrick has no idea what to expect, having spent years barely holding on after the loss of his great love, a somewhat-stalled acting career, and a lifestyle not-so-suited to a six- and a nine-year-old. Quickly realizing that parenting—even if temporary—isn't solved with treats and jokes, Patrick's eyes are opened to a new sense of responsibility, and the realization that, sometimes, even being larger than life means you're unfailingly human.
With the humor and heart we've come to expect from bestselling author Steven Rowley, The Guncle is a moving tribute to the power of love, patience, and family in even the most trying of times.

Wonderfully Thoughtful Story
I enjoyed this gently challenging story. Challenging because I know if I met these characters in real life I would likely find them irritating. Gentle because of the way the ideas and thoughts are presented so sweetly.

A fun read
The Guncle was predictable. Think, if Will and Grace grew legs and walked to California.
The premise of a gay uncle who’s personal tragedy is mirrored in the young people who have come into his care could have tugged at the proverbial heartstrings, but this attempt was undercut by the the casually racist colloquialism “have a powwow.” I then found it odd that the same character would remake the political correctness of acknowledging his tenancy on the Agua Caliente Indian Reservation.
Unfortunately, like it’s cover art, this novel is a bit dated. That being said, I still enjoyed it. I probably wouldn’t recommend it to a friend, maybe to my homophobic aunt who could use some slight exposure to queerness.

Cute. Not great.
The story is good, but the cliches are plentiful and the performance is insufferable. I could only listen for about 10 minutes at a time because the performance was so cutesy, sing songy, and predictable.

Loved it - worth the credit!!!!
Great story and the narration was amazing. Never heard an author read his own story before and he did a great job. A sequel or another book about the throuple would be awesome!

Fun and endearing
The Guncle is equal parts humorous, endearing and irritating. Patrick “inherits” his niece and nephew for the summer after the death of their mother and their father’s need for detox. As a single, gay man, he has no experience with raising children, especially two dealing with the loss of a parent. So, it’s a definite learning experience. I loved all three of them, even if, at times, Patrick comes across too much as Jack from Will and Grace. And I could definitely sympathize with Patrick, having no experience raising young kids myself.
The story was a perfect amuse-bouche for my soul, a diversion from serious family dramas and dark mysteries. But that’s not to say there were no serious issues. Siblings learn to deal with each other as adults. Everyone learning how to process their grief.
There’s a definite Auntie Mame feeling to the story. And I mean that in a good way. I’d be curious how many younger readers will get all the references. Steven Rowley wrote and narrates the story. His performance enhanced the story in a major way. This is one book I think truly is better as an audio experience.

Just amazing.
This is a wonderful story. The added bonus of listening to it being read by the author gives the listener the confidence that they are hearing the characters exactly as they were created; exactly the nuances in personality that drive the story-
I hope this book becomes a movie (Really hope Dan Levy finds it!) so a broader audience can experience this truly lovely, funny, and heartwarming book.

Quirky, funny and beautiful story!
Such a great listen. An incredibly quirky, funny and heartwarming story of Gay Uncle Patrick helping his niece Maize and nephew Grant through grief and tragedy.

You WILL enjoy this book!
I LOVED this book! Seriously. Loved. Not in a “oooh, that was gooood” kind of way but in a “so good, so funny, and full of love” kind of way. I rarely re-read books but can see myself listening to this one over and over (narration is great!). This book is heartwarming, laugh out loud funny, visual, refreshing, and soooo positive. As someone who loves to question things and color outside the boundaries, I thoroughly enjoyed this story. There are moments of pure bliss throughout the story, typically aligned or associated with the many Guncle rules that everyone should know. In fact, I wish there was a list of all the Guncle rules at the end for personal reference. While typically all fun and games, there are many embedded life lessons and truths often forgotten in adulthood. If you need a pick-me-up, heartwarming without being cheesy, or just fun read, I highly recommend this book. You won’t regret it.
Also, this was already picked up to become a movie - I cannot wait & hope the movie is just as awesome as the book. Fingers-crossed Daniel Levy plays GUP!!

This is a funny, sweet, beautiful book about family, grief and old v. new Hollywood. What’s not to love? My favorite listen of the summer!
