Description

New York Times and USA Today best seller!

New York Times best-selling author Maureen Johnson delivers the witty and pulse-pounding conclusion to the Truly Devious series as Stevie Bell solves the mystery that has haunted Ellingham Academy for over 75 years.

Ellingham Academy must be cursed. Three people are now dead. One, a victim of either a prank gone wrong or a murder. Another, dead by misadventure. And now, an accident in Burlington has claimed another life. All three in the wrong place at the wrong time. All at the exact moment of Stevie's greatest triumph....

She knows who Truly Devious is. She's solved it. The greatest case of the century.

At least, she thinks she has. With this latest tragedy, it's hard to concentrate on the past. Not only has someone died in town, but David disappeared of his own free will and is up to something. Stevie is sure that somehow - somehow - all these things connect. The three deaths in the present. The deaths in the past. The missing Alice Ellingham and the missing David Eastman. Somewhere in this place of riddles and puzzles there must be answers.

Then another accident occurs as a massive storm heads toward Vermont. This is too much for the parents and administrators. Ellingham Academy is evacuated. Obviously, it's time for Stevie to do something stupid. It's time to stay on the mountain and face the storm - and a murderer.

In the tantalizing finale to the Truly Devious trilogy, New York Times best-selling author Maureen Johnson expertly tangles her dual narrative threads and ignites an explosive end for all who’ve walked through Ellingham Academy.

Praise for the Truly Devious series:

"Readers, hang tight: there’s one more round to come, and if the signs are right, it'll be to die for." (Publishers Weekly, starred review)

"The Agatha Christie-like ecosystem pairs with lacerating contemporary wit, and alternating past and present scenes makes for a multilayered, modern detective story." (New York Times Book Review)

"Remember the first time reading Harry Potter and knowing it was special? There’s that same sense of magic in the introduction of teen Sherlock-in-training Stevie Bell." (USA Today, four stars)

"Be still, my Agatha-Christie-loving beating heart." (Bustle)

good, but...

The 4 stars is me ignoring the romantic subplot, which I (maybe because I'm cynical and no longer a teenager) found problematic and not okay at all. It came very close to ruining it for me completely. Which is a shame, because as far as YA mysteries go, this was a very good one!
I just can't get past how horrible David was and how unhealthy his and Stevie's relationship was. Ugh.
But yeah. The story was great, the mystery was solid, and the writing was ok.
The narration, well, you get used to it.

Five stars, great bedside manner

Cold meds made it impossible to sit up and have my eyes open to read, so I absorbed Maureen's words through my ears. Like, in one shot. Five out of five Nyquil shots.

Stevie Bell at Her Best

Totally satisfying and exciting conclusion! Fans will love Maureen Johnson's artistry and storytelling. The change of setting - Ellingham on the brink of a massive blizzard - also upped the tension and drama. Really great!

Worth reading all three!

The characters, setting and plot are all cozy and endearing, wry and delightful. Mysteries are romantic, but the crimes that create them much less so, and these books reflect both of those realities. The narrator is very enjoyable to listen to, bringing enough personality to entertain without going too far into melodrama. Her tone is lovely. Enjoyed all three books immensely, finished the three in about a week!

Satisfying conclusion to a delicious mystery

Pays off every beat in Truly Devious and then some. I loved being continually surprised and was delighted by it all.

I benged this whole series!

I had a strong suspension of who it was in both scenarios before it was revealed but not a complete picture much like the main character. The tid bits of discovery and elaborations of the plot throughout the trilogy until the end, plus the dry humor, made it, for me. I loved it! I usually get who the murderer is early-on, but this held me until the picture was complete and all the ends were tied up. I had to complete the picture, it was elaborate there were twists and turns and the characters were well developed. It had a richness to it, and I could see it all in my mind's eye, plus the narrator really seemed to carry the myriad of different voice pitches to make the characters different and distinguishable. If I had to gripe, the only thing for me, was that the love interest of the main character seemed forcibly sociopathic at points, sure he had his own motives and it engendered suspicion but the main character *spoiler alert* breezed by that in the end. . other than that, would recommend!! 👍👍👍
