Ghosts don't exist in our world of today. Life is too pragmatic, too consuming, too busy for past lives to linger on longer than their allotted time, or so Halcyon had believed, until she received a letter from a lawyer claiming that her mother, whom she had thought long dead, had actually been living in another part of the country since Halcyon's early childhood. She had only recently passed away, leaving Halcyon heir to an unexpected fortune and an estate on an isolated island in the middle of the Great Lakes.

In Metsan Valo, her family home on Lake Superior, Anni Halla’s beloved grandmother has died. Among her fond memories, what Anni remembers most vividly is her grandmother’s eerie yet enchanting storytelling. By firelight she spun tall tales of spirits in the nearby forest and waters who could heal - or harm - on a whim. But of course those were only stories.

Description
From the #1 Amazon Charts best-selling author of Daughters of the Lake comes an enthralling spellbinder of love, death, and a woman on the edge.
After a devastating loss, Brynn Wilder escapes to Wharton, a tourist town on Lake Superior, to reset. Checking into a quaint boardinghouse for the summer, she hopes to put her life into perspective. In her fellow lodgers, she finds a friendly company of strangers: the frail Alice, cared for by a married couple with a heartbreaking story of their own; LuAnn, the eccentric and lovable owner of the inn; and Dominic, an unsettlingly handsome man inked from head to toe in mesmerizing tattoos.
But in this inviting refuge, where a century of souls has passed, a mystery begins to swirl. Alice knows things about Brynn, about all of them, that she shouldn’t. Bad dreams and night whispers lure Brynn to a shuttered room at the end of the hall, a room still heavy with a recent death. And now she’s become irresistibly drawn to Dominic - even in the shadow of rumors that wherever he goes, suspicious death follows.
In this chilling season of love, transformation, and fear, something is calling for Brynn. To settle her past, she may have no choice but to answer.

Nothing happens, silly "plot twist" and an absolutely awful narrator. I was disappointed, because I've read a few of her other books and thought they were alright, but this was a miss,

Decent yet boring story, not so decent narration
The story itself has an interesting premise but a slow pace. The setup slowly rises but stalls out and doesn't build to much, missing it's potential. Any hope for a surprise or twist fizzles as the book tapers off into an ending that was predicted a third of the way through. The author reuses some terms several times, which I think of as a person's new favorite saying phase, it always seems unimaginative to me though. Unless everyone in this town is constantly furrowing their brows. It seems as though a lot of inspiration was drawn from the song "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald". While the quotes were fun, a bit more research on the area and of Lake Superior would have helped.
I was expecting more horror and less romance, it doesn't really fit the books which led to it's recommendation.
What is a disappointment is the narrator. Xe Sands has good timing, can't hear her breathing, BUT she slurs some words and unfortunately sounds like a much older lady which makes the characters seem quite old, older than they should. It's sort of confusing to hear the thoughts and speech of a thirty-something year old sounding more like 65 and with little differentiation from senior characters. Every male character has the drawl of someone from the southern states, even those from the great lakes area. It's very unfortunate, but her lack of range detracts from the enjoyment of an otherwise interesting book.
Sadly this ended up being quite boring and I probably won't bother with other titles from this author or narrator.

Can't stand that narrator
I've listened to all Wendy Webb's books. The only thing that ruins them for me is the narrator. That neverending gravely voice is awful. All the men essentially have the same voice wich sounds like an old man.
The story itself is not her best. It's sappy, slow and poorly conceived. Maybe it would have been better with a different narrator

Almost insufferable.
I did stick it out to the end because I kept hoping things would get interesting, so there's that. I'm sorry, this was dull ,sappy, & overly descriptive about the most mundane things. I can't tell you how many times her "heart stopped" or "stomach clenched" and I don't care for the narrator, who sounded smarmy throughout. The premise had potential, but was not well executed.

Not spooky, just hard
This is very unlike most of Wendy Webb's other books. The supernatural/gothic elements are a tiny percentage of the background to the plot - which is recovery from grief and trauma. There isn't much plot or mystery or reveal - just painful, detailed accounts of the traumas, loss, and the all-consuming grief of the characters. It is very raw and realistic in those elements. Everyone in the book learns to live with their pain by finding the right partner to heal them, which might feel reductionist to modern readers who don't believe that the only way to heal is to find a new partner. But it's fiction, so that's no big deal.
Overall this is a dramatic story about grief, trauma, loss, and acceptance - not a spooky gothic mystery like Webb's other novels. Not a bad book, just not the genre I was expecting.

disappointing
Webb/Sands duo is usually fantastic, but this story lacked any kind of substance. Xe Sands was as usual great but the story lacked substance and quite frankly was supremely boring. Most of it was repetitive and served little purpose. Short story made long by excessive narrative.

An unexpected twist at the ending
So far all the Wendy Webb books I read, I enjoyed very much. This book was release in audio on Audible on Sunday, November 1. I finish it in one day. glad to see that she brought back some of the characters from another book. I did not expect that twist at the end. Again, the author did not disappoint. Love the narrator, Love her a warm cozy voice narrating this book.

I just finished this book, and I'm not sure how to feel. It's slightly creepy, but mostly it's profound. It is not a light read. It is about death and grief and love. Well worth reading in a contemplative mood

I loved this book! This is the 2nd novel by this author and I plan to read the rest. She has a very unique style and many twists and turns her book. I love the characters and the thought of there being a place that people go to get away from hurt and yet become one with many others. An excellent read and a great audiobook with Xe Sands!
