Description

When violinist Anna Sun accidentally achieves career success with a viral YouTube video, she finds herself incapacitated and burned out from her attempts to replicate that moment. And when her longtime boyfriend announces he wants an open relationship before making a final commitment, a hurt and angry Anna decides that if he wants an open relationship, then she does, too. Translation: She's going to embark on a string of one-night stands. The more unacceptable the men, the better.

That’s where tattooed, motorcycle-riding Quan Diep comes in. Their first attempt at a one-night stand fails, as does their second, and their third, because being with Quan is more than sex - he accepts Anna on an unconditional level that she has just started to understand herself.

However, when tragedy strikes Anna’s family, she takes on a role that she is ill-suited for, until the burden of expectations threatens to destroy her.

Anna and Quan have to fight for their chance at love, but to do that, they also have to fight for themselves.

Identity, Discovery, Love and Family

Many things about this book resonated with me. Many Asian families generally have very high expectations of their children and would often like their children to marry whom they think is a “suitable match.” Anna Sun deals with heartache and loss as she learns to stand up for herself, despite her family’s expectations and pressure to marry Julian. This is my first read by Helen Hoang and I am looking forward to reading her other two books. I had no idea Hoang was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, until my curiosity about the main characters in her books led me to read more about her. I love that Hoang shows this perspective through her main characters, including the fact that autism sometimes goes unnoticed with girls. I found this to be great insight showing the audience that autism looks different with everyone. I especially found this helpful as an educator that has and will work with students with ASD in the future. This book focuses on happiness and taking the necessary time to heal. It encourages people to not give in to the pressures/ expectations of family and/ or society. There is emphasis in identity and well being, including making decisions to do what is best for oneself.

I was all in this for the love story. Much of the plot was focused on Anna’s drama with her family, a family member’s illness and her self-discovery. Quan got a little too sappy for me at times, but I suppose he found the right woman who understood him and his circumstances. The perspective and message here were strong and I enjoyed this audiobook overall.

Neurodivergent? Worth a listen! Not neurodivergent? Worth a listen!

Really loved the narrators-especially Quon. Anna’s character resonated with me until the very end. Where it deviated is likely due to differences on the spectrum and having different support and expectations through life. Definitely worth reading if you are neurodivergent and looking for something to accurately portray difficulties in relationships and familial pressures.

Not bad but not my fave from this author

lI'm usually a big fan of this authors work but I think this one was a just ok for me. I really had a hard time connecting with the female lead. I found her annoying especially near the end. Her sister was an interesting character though. The male lead was okay but the male reader took me out of it sometimes. The beginning of the story was easier to sink my teeth into compared to the end. I think this may also have to do with the pacing. It gets a lot faster near the end. Overall, I think its an alright book. I prefer some of the authors other stuff though.

Emphatic portrayal of neuro diversity

This book emphatically portrays neuro divergence and I appreciate reading a book where the main character is like me. It made me feel less alone.
