Description

We hide in shadows. Our planet is lost. We are the last humans, and we must go home. Two thousand years ago, aliens destroyed Earth. Our fleets shattered. Billions died.

The last humans fled a burning planet, heading to the stars. Today we are still refugees. Hungry. Afraid. Our enemies hunt us everywhere. So we hide. On distant asteroids. In rundown space stations. In deep caves on frozen worlds. And we dream. Of green hills. Blue skies. Golden fields. We dream of Earth. And for the first time, we have hope.

A few of us, just a handful of brave souls, form the Heirs of Earth. We are humans who stand tall. Who fight back. Aliens call us terrorists. The humans we save call us heroes. We have starships, weapons, and warriors. We can bring humanity home. Earth is far. We have not seen her in many generations. But we have not forgotten. Earth is our heritage. Earth is our birthright. We will return!

Great new series

This seems to be the start of a great new series. My only hope is that we are not going to spend the next 6 books simply getting to earth!

What has me hooked is reading about what Earth is like in this series. Do we find any of the old fleet and weapons from Earth, survivors etc?

Repeat, repeat, repeat

The story line is good but the constant repeating of the characters woes makes me grit my teeth. I think he need words to make the book long enough to meet requirements of the publisher. More story and less repeating and the book would be five stars all around.

Don't waste your credits.

narrated like an old private eye novel. very poorly written with lots of holes. Characters whined constantly no concept of tactics. the flashbacks and whoa is me rambling are just too much and happen too often

Entertaining but lacking

I like the concept of humans not beeing the Alpha dog in a universe filled with aliens, but the characters feels underdeveloped and lacking.

Also the entire galaxy seems to talk English, and everyone understands everyone else. Only a few references to translators for spices who do not communicate verbally. Nothing wrong with that, just takes away from the immersion.

Even though I love Tolkiens great works, there are just too many references to it.

All this beeing said, book is a good time gap if you look beyond the parts that are just not fully there.

Jeffrey Kafer is brilliant as usual.

Enjoyable

I enjoyed the Earthrise series and had high hopes for this one. I like how it has references to the original but so far it is its own story. I will say that every time a reference was made where the character should have been used to something different, for example being higher in status than a fly, really pulled me out of the story. All the sudden what I see as a glaring mistake sucked me out from feeling like I was living in the story. Other than that I look forward to the rest of the series.

A good relaunch

I did like the previous series. Up to about book six. At that point it got a bit tired and ridiculous, or as they say on TV “Jumped the Shark”.

So I was a bit apprehensive but the first book was actually enjoyable, if at times a bit heavy handed, and I am cautiously optimistic about the next book.

I just hope that Aaronson doesn’t drag it out too much again. The story has some legs but I can’t see 9 books coming out of it. A trilogy though should be fun.

Interesting Role Reversal

Humans are not the apex species, hunted and on the run! Interesting twist to a pretty good story. I wish there were a bit more in the way of a military feel to the book as that is what it is trying to portray with the humans that are left and how they are fighting the Scorpions but the descriptions of the battles are still well down. I also wished the author did not repeat some of the flashback information so many times but other than that a pretty good listen.

Boring Fantasy

Not my cup of tea, as it is really a fantasy story vs science fiction. It is also laced with redundant backgroind info. Lastly, the human heroes are all painted as wildly and overly melodramtic, while ALL other cultures and species are super evil, depraved, and / or lazy...with low intellects....though all are space faring races. Bad comic book story. Sorry for the harah criticism; but has to skip 2nd half of book and am not at all interested in follow on volumes.
