Description

After conquering all of Hesse, creating a devilish new dungeon, and establishing himself as the villain that everyone loves to hate, Lucas decides to continue his quest to create new content by taking over as a dungeon master on the mainland.

Unlike the dominant force on the island he left behind, however, the once-mighty Imperium only controls a single capital city in a rapidly shrinking territory, leaving a group of scheming nobles to bicker among themselves and fight over scraps of land. Seen as an upstart and rabble-rouser, Lucas is instantly shunned and must struggle to find somewhere to begin building his new base. Now, after declaring himself the enemy of every man in the city, and with every player in the region hunting his head to claim the bounty placed there, Lucas has to decide which allies he can trust as he fights to stay alive long enough to establish a new lair and gain a foothold in a hostile land.

Introducing new monsters, a curious new group member, and flashy new spells, this gamelit litRPG adventure follows Lucas as he writes his own story as the greatest villain the game world has ever known.

"Another amazing chapter of the Heroic Villain story from Charles Dean. An enthralling story by an author who just keeps hitting homeruns!" (Dave Willmarth, writer of the Greystone Chronicles)

This book is brought to you from the author of the litRPG series War Aeternus, The Bathrobe Knight, and The Merchant of Tiqpa.

too bad

It's sad to say this one is a miss for me. The first was enjoyable minus the sad backstory that's over emphasized. This one is kinda torture porn. Most characters are depicted poorly to justify there mutilation which isn't an instant deal breaker for me but in this book it's way overboard.

On top of that the harem king of women bane of men thing is lame. I hate when an author feels the need to live out his sexual fantasies thru the main character. His monologues are cheesy villain lines yet they make every girl wet for him. When he does this on a massive scale it totally destroyed the book for me. God mode seduction of NPCs maybe of players come on. That's what in any game we'd call a game breaking skill that destroys the challenge and fun of any game/book. Also who could trust any one turned by a few terrible lines.

Lastly the harem thing would probably be more interesting if buddy wasn't still pinning after his dead wife and ruining every happy victory moment with boring reflection of lost love or of past joy gone forever. I dont know his wife and the author assumes your gonna feel for his loss which I stopped doing midway thru the first audiobook when they played that bad music everytime he thought of her. Doubt I'd pick up a third book as it's likely to go full harem godking.

A fiction within other fictions that rings true.

I like the idea of a fantastic video game. I like the idea of interesting relatable characters. I like the idea of characters written so well you swear after the read you had a sunset beer with them on your west facing porch. I like the creativeness of magic in stories. I like when a characters is powerful but the limitations they face seem realistic and consistent. I like the idea of having some sort of guess of the interpersonal relationships of not just the main characters with the protagonist but with each other as well. I like all of these and Charles Dean delivers them to you like delicious smoked pulled pork on a silver platter. Charles Dean does what I think is so damn hard to do for many writers, the sequel. A sequel is a work of art because of the balancing act of building on the first work but creating enough new stuff and turning it up to 11 without breaking the story like some sort of narrative soufflé. I can't suggest this audio book without saying that this book is fun but also that it and it's predecessor touched me in a wound created by recent tragedy and that it was a good release to almost "talk" with the protagonist through the narrative.

What a wonderful Performance!

The stage is set for our Heroic Villain Lucas to take on the world before him. what an exciting book, kept me hooked the entire time. Second verse better then the first! I can't wait for the next book!

not as strong as the first

still good but felt slow and then very abrupt in its action and climaxes. Also as a stand alone it has very little resolution. So I am hopeful that the third will tie up some of the threads that are still dangling from this one.

First Book was great, this one, eh...

So after the first book I immediately jumped into this one hoping it would continue along the same lines. Unfortunately, as other readers have mentioned, this book seems to depart from what made the first book great and almost feels like a side story meant to (hopefully) bridge the first and third books and (again hopefully) get some of the annoying but typical, for this genre, tropes out of the authors system.

The performance was, as always, excellent. Sound Booth never fails to please.

SLIGHT SPOILERS

As for my major complaints
There was very little dungeon building this time around, which is unfortunate as that's one of the main reasons I picked up the first book. And while I get the whole new land, harder to acquire territory, etc. I can only hope this book is just a set up for a major return to this aspect of the story.

Also, the harem issue. I honestly despise this. It takes so much away from the story and makes the whole thing feel like a high school wet dream. The dynamic between the MC and his sister in law (re)turned confidant, or hell, our Fox mercenary who starts with just money money money and by the end of this book seems to be struggling to hold that as her sole form of loyalty, and even Lilith's crazy (I honestly can't think of a better way to put that with her) would have made for such a better focus than the turn toward the villain and his harem. It's so played out at this point that I've outright stopped buying books from favored authors if this is part of one of their series. I get it, it's a fun fantasy, but the genre is already flooded with this topic already.

All in all, I'll pick up the next book in the hopes that there is a return to the setup of the first book. Part of me is hoping that the harem thing becomes more of a way to drive home the "lost and broken man" issue from the first book and that there will be a turn around because of this.

ummm what happened

jeff hays and rest of the voice cast did amazing job.......

that being said the writer forgot what made the first book good it Tossed it aside and it’s feels like the author wrote a wish fulfillment fantasy.

There is no dungeon building which was a shame that was really a good part for the first one.

The npcs now offer to rape women players. That just took me out of the book and got me thinking about the whole lot of lawsuits and ethics of have a VRMMO game have that....like if a teen walked in to that inn would it happen?

The MC now pulls a 180 form the Previous book he was smart had plans for the goals and good friends to can’t decide who he can trust and or bang. the mood swings...? There was a vaguely a goal of wanting to make the game more popular again who would want game where the new boss steals your girl and is broken to fight there no story behind him.

The only other male character on the team is just there to be hit by the girls and belittle to the ground to make the MC look better.

The vast majority of the book take place in a day so no world building very little character building and no time to experience the world form the previous book. all the MC dose is run from one disaster to the next killing everyone form teachers to students to the random innkeeper to all while being a Mediocre villain who steals all the women .... and the damndest thing they go with him and the fact that’s he’s the new boss in town and both and NPCs and players join him. A villain like this would probably make the game crash and burn harder not bring in more fan. Think of the lich king form WoW and then think of this guy who is a lot like little finger form G.O.T. one steals your girl the other takes the world to war......... one of those you need a army to take on.....

for the next book i hope the sister in-laws manager is put down In between books because he was even that good character in the first book to bring back and now that the main characters banging maids it would just look tacky to have two maid bangers

not sure if i’ll buy the next one

You were supposed to be the chosen one

I loved the first book with all my heart. This one fell short. Spoiler: the ending becomes a harem. I have rarely ever liked Harems and when it happened here, it really dampened my love for the series.

LitRPG without shallow characters...

I loved the first book, especially the production done by SBT. It reminds me of listening to some of those old radio programs from back in the day before people were spoiled/force fed what to feel by tv and movies, instead of having to use their imaginations.

This book was as expertly produced as the first. SBT knocks it out of the park. The sound effects add to the experience and the cast does an excellent job of picking up where they left off.

Dean’s characters are brought to life not only by the cast, but by his writing skills. I’ve always thought Dean was well written, and from what I’ve seen from each of his novels, he continues to perfect his craft.

Dean does one thing better than a lot of other LitRPG authors out there, and that is to create characters with depth. You actually get meaningful conversation between characters instead of talking as a means to an end.

Great book, great production, can’t wait for more!

Why?

I really enjoyed the first one. Not sure why the author all of a sudden turned it into a harem story. Ruined a good story and likeable characters. Very unfortunate.

To enjoy this, you need to turn off your brain.

There are some aspects is this story's premise you need to ignore if you want to enjoy this book without going mad.

First, forget that Lucas is supposedly an insanely wealthy ex-CEO. The author doesn't pull off that characterisation at all. He's not mature, smart or devious enough - honestly, he reads more like a moody teen.

When overmatched, he tackles obstacles by trying to overpower them (without the aforementioned power). He's constantly losing verbal spars despite his supposed real world experience and apparently useless Charisma stat. He reads more like a slightly dense protagonist than someone trying to be an amazing villain to revitalise a dying game (so mentally treating him like a kid just makes the story make more sense).

Second, don't take it seriously. The dialogue is on par with some of the worst Telenovelas you can imagine. I think it's played for comedic effect? I'm assuming the author is going for mustachio twirling parodies rather than real villains - real Saturday morning cartoon stuff - which just doesn't play well at all.

The whole point of the story is to become a villain that'll draw in lapsed players back into a dying world...Lucas just comes off as super lame... his entire schtick is literally 'I'm gonna cuck all the dudes in this world and take all your wahmem!'

Finally, you need to imagine that the baddies in this book didn't honestly spout out their entire super secret evil plan in a fully crowded street where everyone could hear them...

Just.... that's not a joke... it actually happens...

I think I'm done with this book. I can't enjoy it without lamenting over how great it could have been given some proper thought... and I just can't turn my brain off that much...

Lilith

She is just an awful character who forces herself, her opinion, her idea of entertainment and subpar subterfuge. I can't understand why such a garbage character would be made unless it was for filler and lack of imagination. The MC pretends to be an idiot who cant do anything about her because she's a "valuable asset". She's one MODERATELY strong assassin why no sense of loyalty. ONE of hundreds of women who follow her. But yeah, definitely worth the annoying and super obvious time wasting bullshit she constantly entails. I'm going to hold on to this book for a bit so my review stays, then return both. It's that bad.

In the end just another harem book.

If you enjoyed the first book stop there. This turns into yet another juvenile harem book.
