À propos de cet audio

At the dawn of the last millennium in the year 1000, Europe was one of the world's more stagnant regions - an economically undeveloped, intellectually derivative, and geopolitically passive backwater, with illiteracy, starvation, and disease the norm for almost everyone.

Yet only three centuries later, all of this had changed. A newly invigorated cluster of European societies had revived city life, spawned new spiritual and intellectual movements and educational institutions, and had begun, for reasons both sacred and profane, to expand at the expense of neighbors who traditionally had expanded at Europe's expense. This series of 24 lectures, filled with memorable detail, examines how and why Europeans achieved this stunning turnaround. By its conclusion, you will be able to describe and analyze the social, intellectual, religious, and political transformations that set into motion this midsummer epoch of the medieval world - an epoch you will come to know very well through Professor Daileader's vivid descriptions and examinations of its people, including

  • the warrior aristocracy of knights, castellans, counts, and dukes;
  • free and unfree peasants; and townspeople, both artisans and merchants;
  • its vibrant stirrings of religion and intellect, including monastic life and charismatic figures like Francis of Assisi and Thomas Aquinas;
  • the lives of those outside the religious mainstream, especially heretics and Jews;
  • and its major political developments and events, including the First Crusade, the Norman Conquest of England, and the granting of the Magna Carta.

History always bored me to tears when I was in school. Of course, that was the 1960s. Then I joined the Society for Creative Anachronism, and discovered how delightful the past was!

Dates? Events? Forget it! The real meat is how people lived, and what motivated them. This set of lectures is fascinating.

It was an age of darkness. NOT!

I listened to this course as part of a year-long process of teaching my congregation about church history. I found it to be a helpful complement to the other resources I consulted, and it was particularly helpful at placing Christianity within the broader social norms and development of the time.

An excellent overview of this time period

This prof is great to listen to. Very down to earth, with a but of humour here and there. Highly recommend if you like history.

Great lecture

Some parts of this book were a bit dry, but I have been curious for a while about how people in the middle ages lived. I found the description of early universities very interesting.

A bit dry but informative

really enjoyed it but sometimes his inflections really distracts from the material. not sure I would listen again but lots of good info and professor is definitely well versed in all aspects of this course

A good surface level review. The prof draws out the word 'and' to a somewhat distracting degree but you get used to it

Good

Interesting, well researched, balanced and well presented. I recommed this course to anyone interested in this period--and we all should be.

Balanced and comprehensive

I enjoyed this course greatly and I am now going to the website to see what other courses are available by Mr Daileader... he is an interesting and eloquent teacher.

This was an illuminating listen

University level course? Quite frankly I'd be surprised if you could keep an 8th grade class interested in this nonsense!
It doesn't help that the instructor sounds completely bored with his topic and races through it as fast as possible, sighing frequent just to make certain you appreciate how bored he truly is!
The topics are all over the place and none are presented in any detail.
very disappointing

DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY!

I really enjoyed the Early Middle Ages course so I got this one as well. The lecturer is great, and it is all very informative. But I just prefer chronological histories, and only the last third of the course took that approach.

Informative but prefer chronological history
