À propos de cet audio

A young woman discovers a strange portal in her uncle's house, leading to madness and terror in this gripping new novel from the author of the "innovative, unexpected, and absolutely chilling" (Mira Grant, Nebula Award-winning author) The Twisted Ones.

Pray they are hungry.

Kara finds these words in the mysterious bunker that she’s discovered behind a hole in the wall of her uncle's house. Freshly divorced and living back at home, Kara now becomes obsessed with these cryptic words and starts exploring the peculiar bunker - only to discover that it holds portals to countless alternate realities. But these places are haunted by creatures that seem to hear thoughts...and the more you fear them, the stronger they become.

With her distinctive "delightfully fresh and subversive" (SF Bluestocking) prose and the strange, sinister wonder found in Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth, The Hollow Places is another compelling and white-knuckled horror novel that you won't be able to pause.

One of the most unique and refreshing horror novels I've read this year, I absolutely loved it from start to finish. The story is original, the characters are instantly likeable, the horror is truly horrific, and the tension is filled right to the brim.

THE HOLLOW PLACES is the story of recent divorceé Kara, who returns to her hometown to help her uncle look after his museum of curiosities, only to discover that the museum leads to a dangerous alternate reality where monsters await and nothing is what it seems.

Firstly, Kara is spectacular. She's hilarious, down-to-earth, generous, motivated, and adaptable. I absolutely adored her banter, especially when she brought her friend Simon along for the ride. And what a ride it was.

The realm those two stumble into is beyond creepy. The atmosphere and imagination on display are top-notch. I was shocked, grossed out, and thrilled by the mysterious world Kingfisher created. Especially because even at the end, you don't learn everything. Certain questions are left open for interpretation, which I absolutely love.

If you like THE MIST but are looking for something with less emotional damage and funnier dialogue, then THE HOLLOW PLACES is the book for you. It is fun from start to finish and I cannot wait to continue reading more of Kingfisher's work.

Absolutely loved this book and couldn't put it down- it hooked me from the very beginning. The author did an amazing job at creating a relatable and lovable protagonist and equally wonderful companion. The plot was entirely unique and really kept you guessing what could possibly happen next.

Amazing read!

I don't recall the author crediting Blackwood with the entire idea of the other world the characters go to but everything about it is an exact copy of the premise of a short story written decades prior. Now that I've read the short story, everything that does make this book unique seems hamfisted. I loved the other world they go to the most and knowing it's conception is not original shocked me when I happened upon the original short story by accident. What the heck, Kingfisher?

A difficult subject to master but T. Kingfisher makes it look easy. It was mysterious, horrifying, captivating and darkly hilarious. A very entertaining read.

Captivating and dark

Interesting story and pretty entertaining. I wouldn't say it was in any way scary though. But definitely enjoyable :)

Enjoyable listen. I like the cat

The narrator, Hilary Huber, was fantastic. Her voice was a perfect match for the main character.

The Hollow Places is a lot of fun! I liked Kara - she accepts her faults and flaws and just goes with it, as well as having a bit of quirkiness to her that makes her realistic. She has this self-deprecating sense of humour that is relatable and not pathetic.
The other character, Simon, was also fun and likeable. The two played off one another really well and had an easy friendship that was believable.

This novel is also funny. Like really really funny. I laughed out loud numerous times while listening. I was not expecting this from a horror novel.

The horror aspects, to be honest, weren’t that scary, but I was fine with that. What I loved was the mystery and the tone surrounding the “hollow place”. If you’ve read House of Leaves there’s a serious vibe from that going on, at first, then it spawns into something different. There are mysteries - some of which are resolved at the end, some are not - and a twist that you kind of start guessing halfway through but aren’t sure why. And then when it happens, it’s not really what you expect.

At a couple of points, the story started to drag for a little bit, but it wasn’t egregious and the story soon ramped up again. I was never confused and I loved the setting (both the Wonder Museum and the Willow World). I will definitely listen/read another one of Kingfisher's novels.

A fresh, funny, and engrossing horror.

Great performance, wonderfully fun characters, spooky concept. Extra rewarding if you've read Algernon Blackwood's "The Willows."

As soon as I'm done this review, I'm starting another Kingfisher novel. How can I not? This was incredible!

Wish it was longer!

Interesting story, likeable characters, some very unique ideas, and good naration. (SPOILER ALERT) The ending was more of a fizzle than a creschendo.

Good... mostly

It’s simple. Sometimes characters make or break a novel. That’s the case here. There are some good scares and good parts to this book but a fair bit of them are ruined by dialogue that attempts to constantly make poorly timed jokes between the two characters. They show they have chemistry but detract from anything scary going on.

Story was fine but characters are hard

Not as good as the original. drags a bit at the end. okay otherwise, though.
