Description

An extraordinary story of a girl, her grandfather, and one of nature’s most mysterious and beguiling creatures: the honeybee.

Meredith May recalls the first time a honeybee crawled on her arm. She was five years old, her parents had recently split, and suddenly, she found herself in the care of her grandfather, an eccentric beekeeper who made honey in a rusty old military bus in the yard. That first close encounter was at once terrifying and exhilarating for May, and in that moment, she discovered that everything she needed to know about life and family was right before her eyes, in the secret world of bees.

May turned to her grandfather and the art of beekeeping as an escape from her troubled reality. Her mother had receded into a volatile cycle of neurosis and despair and spent most days locked away in the bedroom. It was during this pivotal time in May’s childhood that she learned to take care of herself, forged an unbreakable bond with her grandfather, and opened her eyes to the magic and wisdom of nature.

The bees became a guiding force in May’s life, teaching her about family and community, loyalty and survival, and the unequivocal relationship between a mother and her child. Part memoir, part beekeeping odyssey, The Honey Bus is an unforgettable story about finding home in the most unusual of places and how a tiny, little-understood insect could save a life.

Great book but the narration not so much...

Such a lovely book but the narrator did not do it justice in my opinion. I found myself listening and constantly thinking how much better this could be if it were narrated by someone else.

excellent story, poor performance

I absolutely loved this story but nearly gave up on it twice because of the narrator's way of speaking. Glad I stuck it out.

Touching story

Loved it! Such a beautifully written and touching memoir, my heart exploded. I raised my 2 girls in Carmel Valley, the old airstrip met where our backyard ended. I did not like the narrator at all. She would read in a normal tone then fluctuate into a raspy nasal high pitch. It was unnerving . I so wished the author had read the book. Several times I wanted to stop listening and get the book, which by the way includes some actual photos of grandpa, Mathew, mom, granny , grandpas hives etc.

Really enjoyed this

In fact I listened to it twice in a row and will listen again! I am a backyard beekeeper and the product of a broken family. Both aspects of the story resonate with me. The bee information is accurate, and it is a good depiction of how and why the bees are so important to me. Wonderful story and great performance

oh my

I am not very good at writing reviews. this book really touched my heart. it taught about about family and one of the most important things is how it taught you so much about bees now I know that bees are becoming more and more extinct and we do need them desperately I have a friend who raises bees and sometimes they die out she's always so sad when they do but she helps them when she can and gets more in fact she's wonderful with all of God's Little Creatures she just found baby birds that have broken legs and she put splints on there legs and now they can walk and fly away. the book really makes you realize what we are doing not only to one another but the creatures around us. I cryed.

I loved this story & how it was crafted.

Meredith,
Thank you for sharing your life with the world. How Grandpa and you intertwined the struggles and challenges you faced in your life with what we can all learn through the bee colony was true art.

Absolutely amazing and educational

As a bee keeper of currently over 52 hives I have enjoyed this book to the fullest. At times I was moved by things she spoke of in the book and heart wanted so much to be there and her amazing grandpa!! Excellent writer very detailed and anyone would enjoy this book. I am going to now buy the book to read myself instead of listening to it as I enjoyed it that much. Thank you Meredith!!!!! ✌🏻👍🏻🐝

I'd love to see this made into a movie!

I loved this book! It was like two completely different stories intertwined, meshing perfectly! Each would stand on their own but as the book explains, we need each other for survival. If you are like me (and based on other reviews, most everyone that read this book) and found the "bee story" enthralling, check out the book BEES by Laline Paull. I will be checking this author's other works.
