À propos de cet audio
A dark, gripping, compulsive psychological thiller from bestseller Nina Manning
The perfect life? ...Or the perfect lie?
When Regi moves into her new house share, she's ready for a clean slate. A new home. A new routine. A new identity...
Desperate to escape the shadow of her past that follows her everywhere she goes, Regi finds the ideal distraction in the perfect lives of others on social media.
But as innocent scrolling turns into an unhealthy obsession, Regi will soon learn that seeking perfection comes at a price...
Perfect for fans of Lisa Jewell, K L Slater and Jackie Kabler.

One of the big reveals in this Nina Manning story is that the "Now" and "Then" storylines follow two different people. Once you understand that, the confusing & disconnected storytelling technique becomes much easier to tolerate. Manning should have *embraced* it and concentrated on the historical exposition and psychological suspense aspects of the narrative. Boldwood Books could have cast two readers to emphasize the point and readers/listeners could have simply enjoyed a very interesting tale involving women damaged/deranged by trauma.
Bottom Line: 'The House Mate' could easily have been better.. but it's not terrible. Yes, the ending is hard to swallow (and does some serious 'Dallas'-styled cheating), but the Social Media/Social Media Addiction commentary is topical, the exploration of compulsive behaviors is credible, and the conflicts between four young women sharing a flat in a college neighborhood are passably intriguing, moderately well-written, and quite realistic.
The production standards, sadly, compound the errors of the project:
Helen Keeley reads with professional timbre and cadence.. and clearly understands the panicky characters Manning intended (the neurotic tone is spot-on). Unfortunately, she also has a natural sibilance that sound engineers are unable to soften (avoid earbuds on this one) - and exhibits over-the-top voice-acting (some of her chosen voices are overwhelmingly annoying). The performance is noticeably below average.
I was able to get this 5/10 star book included with my subscription (as a free 'Plus' option) - and that's appropriate. The book represents a bit of a missed opportunity, but even as it stands it wasn't a complete waste of time.. if they ask for a Credit, however, spend it elsewhere.
