À propos de cet audio

Four murders. Two detectives. One mystifying crime.

On Christmas Eve, DCI Mackenzie Jones is called to a shooting at a remote farmhouse. Ralph Mallender believes his father lies dead inside. When three more bodies are discovered, it's clear a festive family gathering has turned into a gruesome tragedy.

At first it seems like an open-and-shut case: a murder suicide committed by Ralph's volatile brother Cameron. Then new evidence makes Mack suspect the man who reported the crime is in fact the perpetrator.

But Mack isn't the only one with a stake in the case. Private investigator Atticus Priest has been hired to get Ralph acquitted. That means unearthing any weaknesses in Mack's evidence.

Irascible, impatient, and unpredictable, Atticus has weaknesses of his own. Mack knows all about them because they share a past - both professionally and personally. This time round, however, they aren't on the same side. And as Atticus picks at the loose ends of the case, everything starts to unravel in a way neither of them could ever have predicted....

Exactly what I was expecting but better

I just finished listening to this and I'm currently listening to the second one. It was exactly the kind of detective mystery I was expecting but there were a few twists I wasn't expecting. Simon Vance one of my favourite narrators and always makes for a great listen. I'm really hoping this series continues.

Good but not great

This is the first time I have listened to anything by this author so I was a bit hesitant but since the reviews were good, I took a chance. Overall, the book is good but I have only two major problems with it. First and foremost, the narrator reads it like some very old college professor reading a very boring text book. The main male character is a young and virile detective but the narrator does not live up to this. A younger and livelier voice would definitely would make this far more appealing. And his attempts at a female voice are horrible. Also, if you really listen to the story, the author telegraphs the identity of the murderer almost right away. So, it stops being a mystery then and more of a whatever. Otherwise, the writing is good and the understanding of British court procedure is well done. Granted, I did feel there was almost too much of it but it was bearable. But the story does have a few good moments. Atticus Priest is a great character and I hope he will get better with time. I do think he needs a bit more development. His counterpoint, Mack, is not so likable. She is quite a unnecessary character. Love the dog. The book is good if you have need of a light read. Will I purchase the next in the series? Probably not.

Interesting Story But a Two Big Errors by Author

It is an interesting story and characters, but I found it quite transparent, and then it lost me completely when the author made two big mistakes at the end. Do I reveal it here.....not completely; however, it has to do with a piece of material Atticus finds in the basement, and how it all plays into the ending. It takes some thinking about it. I won't read another one by this author. Too bad I liked Atticus.

Enjoyable Crime Thriller

Mark Dawson introduces an interesting character: an Aspberger's ("on the spectrum") hyperfocused Private Investigator with observational skills comparable to Poe's 'C. Auguste Dupin' & love for early 1970s Psychedelic & Prog rock and a mutt named 'Bandit'. The author simultaneously follows the dedication of former lover Detective Chief Inspector 'Mackenzie "Mack" Jones' to solving the mysterious mass killing of a troubled family - at the expense of peace at home. The writing is capable, the plotting is creditable, and the in-court trial dialogue is a bit melodramatic but sounds reasonably authentic. Still, character development is the star of this show. I was entertained.

As to presentation: I am a fan of reader Simon Vance - and he is far better suited to reading Mystery-Thrillers like this than he is reading Fantasy literature. His diction, timbre, and cadence are perfect for this story and his understanding of the author's intended tone is near-psychic. If you are given the choice between a text copy of the book or this recorded version, choose this one seven days a week (I still recommend accelerating playback speed to 1.10X to make up for Vance's almost "arrogant" reading style).

Altogether, 'The House In The Woods' is worthy of 7.5 stars out of 10. The 'Atticus Priest' character has some flaws, but I'm pleased that I stumbled on him when exploring Crime Thrillers on the 'Plus' menu. Even when the book leaves the "included with your subscription" catalog, spending a Credit wouldn't be crazy.

[Note: Dawson's 'John Milton' and 'Group 15' Spy Thrillers are far better than his Mysteries. Consider investing in those books if you find you like his style]
