À propos de cet audio

“Amazing…I was completely surprised by the ending of this beautifully told and written book.”—Reese Witherspoon

“A triumph of historical fiction” (The Washington Post), an instant New York Times bestseller, and a Reese’s Book Club pick, set in 1950s Philadelphia and Washington, DC, that explores what it means to be a woman and a mother, and how much one is willing to sacrifice to achieve her greatest goal.

1950s Philadelphia: fifteen-year-old Ruby Pearsall is on track to becoming the first in her family to attend college. But a taboo love affair threatens to pull her back down into the poverty and desperation that has been passed on to her like a birthright.

Eleanor Quarles arrives in Washington, DC, with ambition and secrets. When she meets the handsome William Pride at Howard University, they fall madly in love. But William hails from one of DC’s elite wealthy Black families, and his parents don’t let just anyone into their fold. Eleanor hopes that a baby will make her finally feel at home in William’s family and grant her the life she’s been searching for. But having a baby—and fitting in—is easier said than done.

With their stories colliding in the most unexpected of ways, Ruby and Eleanor will both make decisions that shape the trajectory of their lives.

The storytelling was what kept me going but there is no climax in this story. It just keeps going stale. Quite predictable but due to the narrator's skill, enjoyable listen.

Predictable

The historical descriptions really made you feel like you went back in time. It also gives you insight on what life was like for young women especially young women of color

Selected this book because Reese just added it to her book club list. It didn’t disappoint!! The story is heartbreaking and beautiful. The narration is clear and beautifully done. While parts of the story are hard to hear, I was humbled. A story I won’t soon forget!

The dialogues are enthralling and perfectly narrated. The story of both women was equally moving, as well as the ending. Excellent pick for BHM, too. I liked the historical references that were spread throughout the book, at the relevant moments. Loved it.

Loved this Reese's Pick

The summary states their stories come together in the most unexpected of ways, however I had guessed the ending much sooner than it was even remotely hinted at in the book. While I did find it quite predictable, the story itself was beautifully written & the narrators did awesome!

Still worth the read!

This is my first time reading one of Sadeqa’s novels, but certainly not the last! This book made me go through all types of emotions and left me longing for more in the end. I was invested from the first word, to the final punctuation. Great read.

Great introduction to this author!

Compelling based on historical events and the author’s own family experiences. It however could be interpreted as perpetuating racial stereotyping and class segregation. Not my favourite.
