À propos de cet audio

This is the original 1927 story of The House on the Cliff: The Hardy Boys Book 2. Frank and Joe Hardy, brothers who are high school students, use their investigation skills to solve the mystery of the vacant house on the cliff that was supposed to be haunted. Then it was suspected of being the abode of criminals. When Mr. Hardy goes to investigate—and disappears—the boys set to work to find their father. Their investigation leads to plenty of excitement and danger with international smugglers to clear up the mystery of the house on the cliff.

Much has changed in America since 1927. The modern listener may be delighted with the warmth and innocence of the characters, but uncomfortable with the racial, social, and sexist terms and stereotypes. As such, this book is a part of our heritage, a window into our real past.

I liked how the story was complex and cool but I did not like the how the narrator performed.

The story was great, but the narrator was not the best.

The narrator’s voice isn’t terribly compelling, but the book was free so I could gladly have overlooked that. Instead it’s the lamentably inadequate explanation of the content which really dismays.

I made the mistake of playing this for my son without reading it first. I’ve read the original 1930s Nancy Drew books so I was fully prepared to discuss outdated attitudes in general, but it did not occur to me a site in this day and age would host a recording in which the N word is read aloud without warning.

I have since found reviews on the American site which warn about the content, but there is no similar review on the Canadian one, and the title details alone do not advise of this specific content.

This needs an explicitly stated warning naming the exact content, not a vague general disclaimer about “terms and stereotypes,” so that readers can make a properly informed decision before acquiring the title.

A vague disclaimer is woefully insufficient
