À propos de cet audio
A gripping, pulse-pounding DI Barton thriller from the top 50 bestselling author, Ross Greenwood
Winter is coming, and Detective Inspector Barton is facing the toughest case of his career...
Ellen Toole's therapist told her to forget the past, but with her family story shrouded in secrecy, that’s easier said than done. The approaching long nights of winter loom threateningly in front of her, and with her mother on her death bed, Ellen has never felt more alone. When it becomes clear that her mother has kept secrets about a history darker than Ellen ever imagined, Ellen must find answers about the past if she has any hope for a future.
DI Barton and his team are still recovering from a particularly tough and grisly case, so a report of a kidnapping, followed by the discovery of two dead bodies, is the last thing they need. There’s a murderer on the loose, and the killer needs to be stopped before they strike again. This winter, there will be vengeance on Ellen's mind, and DI Barton will struggle with his hardest case to date.
How can Barton find the truth, when all the victims and witnesses are dead?

©2020 Ross Greenwood (P)2020 Boldwood BooksIt's made me realize that I'm not a huge fan of murder mysteries with firsthand narration from the killer. And apparently that is the format of this series. But just the same, it worked well, here. The unreliable narration from the villain, which usually frustrates me, was compelling in this case, as both the narrator and the reader know that it is unreliable, and both are trying to figure out what's actually going on. And then in the end, it wasn't so unreliable after all.
The villain was thought-provoking and I'm still not sure what to make of them. I think their story played out in a very satisfying way, even though, at few points, I found myself wishing that they might get away! They were neither sympathetic nor unsympathetic. Rather, I could understand their actions without either approval or judgement. The story was so excessive that, if written differently, it could have been darkly hilarious, but as it was, it was pensive and grim.
I also love that the protagonist is a decent guy with a stable, healthy family life. The recurring characters are quite likable.
Finally, usually I hate twist endings, but the one liner at the end was great, and hammered home the themes of nature versus nurture present throughout the book.
