Histoire
Will Robie escaped his small Gulf Coast hometown of Cantrell, Mississippi, after high school, severing all personal ties, and never looked back. Not once. Not until the unimaginable occurs. Unlike the missions Robie undertook in the service of his country, where his target was clearly defined, digging into his father's case only reveals more questions. Robie is drawn into the hidden underside of Cantrell, where he must face the unexpected and possibly deadly consequences of the long-ago choices made by father and son.

Something sinister is going on in Baronville. The rust belt town has seen four bizarre murders in the space of two weeks. Cryptic clues left at the scenes - obscure Bible verses, odd symbols - have the police stumped. Amos Decker and his FBI colleague Alex Jamison are in Baronville visiting Alex's sister and her family. It's a bleak place: a former mill and mining town with a crumbling economy and rampant opioid addiction. Decker has been there only a few hours when he stumbles on a horrific double murder scene.

Description
America has enemies - ruthless people that the police, the FBI, even the military can't stop. That's when the U.S. government calls on Will Robie, a stone-cold hitman who never questions orders and always nails his target.
But Will Robie may have just made the first - and last - mistake of his career....
It begins with a hit gone wrong. Robie is dispatched to eliminate a target unusually close to home in Washington, D.C. But something about this mission doesn't seem right to Robie, and he does the unthinkable: He refuses to kill. Now, Robie becomes a target himself and must escape from his own people.
Fleeing the scene, Robie crosses paths with a wayward teenage girl, a 14-year-old runaway from a foster home. But she isn't an ordinary runaway - her parents were murdered, and her own life is in danger. Against all of his professional habits, Robie rescues her and finds he can't walk away. He needs to help her.
Even worse, the more Robie learns about the girl, the more he's convinced she is at the center of a vast cover-up, one that may explain her parents' deaths and stretch to unimaginable levels of power. Now, Robie may have to step out of the shadows in order to save this girl's life... and perhaps his own.

Competing with podcast productions?
The addition of background sounds are decent. Their placement makes sense, reinforce themes, and amplify the drama.
The randomly placed music however is intrusive and a waste of production effort IMO. It detracts from the story with it's seemingly arbitrary placement and does nothing to enhance the storytelling, the characters, or the plot. I'm so distracted with the haphazard 'musical' interruptions, I can't finish the book.

A decent listen!
I love Baldacci, but I do have some complaints about this listen. While the story has good flow and the narration is solid, it’s pretty unrealistic and the use of the same narrators for his books makes it difficult at some points to remember you’re dealing with different characters.
I would still recommend the book as it’s consistent with the good writing Baldacci produces. Very entertaining.

Poorly finished!
The overall story line was good and I could have given even a 3.5 star but it finished rather ridiculously!
How in the world a Saudi prince would speak Farsi?!! I guess the country’s name, Saudi Arabia, should give a very clear hint about their language!
Then anybody who has read a little about the Middle East should know about the Arabs and Persians historical feud and because of that they never ever team up against anyone even the same enemy. It was quite poorly researched and very poorly finished!

Story Is OK. Performance, Not So Much.
No review this time. Just some quick notes.
The novel starts slowly. It takes awhile for the plot to grab your interest. But once it does, the ride is good fun.
The concluding tying up of loose ends is hackish. Build the conclusions into the plot. Don't wait for the last few chapters and then have the characters amaze each other with descriptions of how each plot line was resolved. At best, this is evidence of a lazy writer. At worst, an incompetent one. Baldacci is fully competent. He can do much better.
Narration is uneven. Female voices, in particular, seem miscast. An FBI agent with such a strong, though intermittent, Brooklyn accent?
Audio production is awful. The sound effects and music are distracting, making it impossible to lose yourself in the story. This audiobook would work better with less: fewer narrators (McLarty could handle it better alone), fewer sound effects, less music. It might be good for Baldacci to remember: One reason many of us prefer books to, say, movies, is that books allow our imaginations to "fill in the blanks." The sound of a stereotypical bullet adds little; and has a cost.
Conclusion? Decent escapist fiction. But probably a story better READ. Buy the book. Skip this audio.

What did you like best about The Innocent: A Novel? What did you like least?
Story was pretty good. I like lots of action. I would have been happy to have more action especially of the hand-to-hand combat variety of which there was none.
How could the performance have been better?
Only one narrator. I kept thinking the second female narrator was my bluetooth earpiece talking to me. I found the second narrator and sound effects distracting and detracting from the story. The sound effects so nothing but alert you to early to the possibility of a plot twist. Also the main male narrator sounds a little old for the main character.

Over produced with music and sound effects...
When I buy an audio book I'm looking for the reading experience without investing the exclusive time that reading requires. I'm not looking for a radio drama. I enjoy this author's books, characters and story lines. The narrator, Ron McLarty is excellent. I didn't stay with the book enough to hear Ms Cassidy, but multiple narrators make me concerned that the narrator(s) will be acting rather than reading. Added sounds like music and sound effects take away from the my imagination. I find ricochets, gunfire, etc distracting to the point that I decided to return this book.

I generally don't leave reviews but I was compelled to review this performance.... The sound effects are very distracting and the added female voice sounds spliced in and computer generated (wrecked the story for me listening to her). The guys voice was only marginally better..... Shockingly Bad for Baldacci
Having read or listened to over 15 other Baldacci novels (and LOVED them all) I was sorry I didn't read the negative reviews on this one.
I DETEST the music and sound effects that are creeping in to many recordings lately. The music and effects included in this one was over the top and didn't enhance the experience for me at all. It is extremely annoying and distracting.
Nevertheless, when the story is phenomenal, I grit my teeth and ignore the sappy music or gun shot noise. The plot here is so far fetched I couldn't decide which was more painful.
It's hard for me to believe that this book is not a first effort by an author who may or may not get published one day. Does Baldacci now have a stable of writers cranking out books for him like James Patterson?

Fun book-sound effects, music, two voices annoying
Is there anything you would change about this book?
Drop the sound effects, music, and two voices! I found it very annoying. I regret downloading this book before any reviews were posted. I won't make that mistake again.
How could the performance have been better?
Drop the sound effects, music, and two voices. I like Ron McLarty reading (only).
