Another packed story in THE BLACK WITCH CHRONICLES that follows Elloren as she struggles to come to terms with her identity, lack of power, and incredible loss as cruel forces sweep to take over the realms.

This book is a lot of build-up. Most of the plot is centered around further solidifying Elloren as she continues breaking free of her people's teachings, as well as preparing for the larger events of the series. Though this can be seen as "second-book syndrome," I actually enjoyed the slower pacing. It allowed more time for the characters, their emotions, and their relationships to grow.

Elloren remains an empathetic character and I appreciated that she was truly doing her best, given how she's been raised and how she sees herself. It was nice to see more of her fire grow and see her willing to fight to support her friends. The tone of this book was much darker and she suffered quite a bit, so I was glad to see more of her passion emerge later in the book.

All of the side characters, aside from the antagonists, were complex and layered. There were new characters and groups introduced that added to this challenging political story. The bond between Elloren and Ivan continued to grow and I appreciated the direction it went. Elloren had great dialogues with many characters, and to be honest, much of the dialogues were the highlight of the book for me.

While there aren't endless action scenes, there were plenty of dramatic moments that made this book very powerful and challenging, especially near the end. There is a sense of heaviness, danger, and consequence that I hope continues through the rest of the series.

There are two major twists at the end. I don't know if it was because of the prose or plot, or that I just read so much I can identify these things, but I figured both of them out early on and was not surprised by either. That said, I didn't need shock value to enjoy the book. Instead, there is a sense of "Well, now that that's out of the way, I'm excited for what will happen next!"
