Description

"A heart-pounding roller coaster ride." (Tami Hoag, number one New York Times best-selling author of The Boy)

*A Crime Reads Most Anticipated Book of 2021*

A serial killer and his copycat are locked in a violent game of cat and mouse. Can DI Anjelica Henley stop them before it’s too late?

On the day she returns to active duty with the Serial Crimes Unit, Detective Inspector Anjelica Henley is called to a crime scene. Dismembered body parts from two victims have been found by the river.

The modus operandi bears a striking resemblance to Peter Olivier, the notorious Jigsaw Killer, who has spent the past two years behind bars. When he learns that someone is co-opting his grisly signature - the arrangement of victims’ limbs in puzzle-piece shapes - he decides to take matters into his own hands.

As the body count rises, DI Anjelica Henley is faced with an unspeakable new threat. Can she apprehend the copycat killer before Olivier finds a way to get to him first? Or will she herself become the next victim?

Drawing on her experience as a criminal attorney, debut novelist Nadine Matheson delivers the page-turning crime novel of the year. Taut, vivid and addictively sinister, The Jigsaw Man will leave you breathless until the very last minute.

Loved 97% of this book

I loved the narration and the vast majority of this book. Although it’s graphic in a few passages, it’s not gratuitous. My only complaint is the ending. To avoid giving anything away, I won’t say more. Otherwise, a gripping and very enjoyable read. It kept me company during many walks - one of the only activities I can do outside my home during COVID.

disappointing

3 might be me being harsh, but the thing is, I've been looking forward to this for almost a year, when I first saw it in the "upcoming releases" section on Audible. I guess I had built up my expectations, because boy, was this a let down. I literally judged a book by its cover and was disappointed. But the cover really is great. And the title (and blurb) promised a twisted serial killer mystery (and a first in a series, at that). The book, though, was decidedly average and honestly pretty generic. The only thing to set it apart from
the massive slough of other female lead English serial killer mysteries is the protagonist. Not because she's Black British (which barely factors in except for a few throwaway lines about how her family/community feels confused and betrayed by her joining up. Which is a valid and important story to tell. That doesn't get told, here.) but because she's so aggressively unsympathetic. Like, the author pulled out all the stops to make the reader not really care about her. The fact that she cheats on her self-pitying milquetoast husband is just the icing on cake. I am so tired of the thing where the protagonist has to be a mess and have a turbulent personal life. Like, it's ok to not be a train wreck. I kind of feel like it's such a prevalent trope because it adds tension when there isn't enough in the main plot; it feels lazy.
But yeah, if you're into British serial killer procedurals with stereotypical "strong female" leads with dubious morals, this is a winner.
If you're interested in a well-crafted mystery/thriller that you can really sink your teeth into, or even a goofy, over the top gruesome thriller with a killer with an unusual MO... maybe not.

Great book

Like watching a great British detective series on Acorn. Excellent narration and story you just have to keep listening to.
