When a high-value scientist is taken hostage inside the galaxy's most dangerous prison, Halek Cain is the only man for the job.

The last remaining survivor of the Reaper program, Hal is an unstoppable force of fuel and madness. A veteran amputee-turned-cyborg, he has a history of violence and a talent for killing that is unmatched by any soldier.

With the promise of freedom as his only incentive, he'll stop at nothing to earn back his life from the people who made him, imprisoned him, and were too afraid to let him die.

Experience this exciting beginning to a brand-new series set in the Renegade Star universe. If you're a fan of Escape from New York, Renegade Star, or Deus Ex, you'll love this epic sci-fi thriller.

I dug the premise even if it was a bit derivative. But the plot has all these threads that are never deleted with. Further more some of the characters seem to have no clear motivation, or the flip back and forth. It was a bit of fun, but I'm not going to bother with the series beyond this initial installment.

Ray Porter delivers but the plot is kind of a mess

It’s a pretty on the nose recreation of escape from New York in the renegade star universe.

This isn’t bad but if you have those movies fresh in your mind the mystery and wonder is somewhat muted. Otherwise another great story from JN Chaney.

Escape from New York in space

The best part of this story is when Snake infiltrates the prison and finally finds the Presid.. oh, wait.
Yes, this J.N. Chaney/Scott Moon story borrows unforgiveably heavily from John Carpenter's 1981 film 'Escape From New York'.. but I enjoyed the take. 'Halek Cain' is an imprisoned cybernetically-enhanced Spec-Ops supersoldier offered a pardon if he rescues a V.I.P. from a dangerous lawless prison overrun with criminal gangs. The plot moves quickly and is loaded with well-described well-choreographed action (including a creditable cat & mouse battle with a villainous upgraded supersoldier sent to kill Cain). You are forgiven if you find yourself rolling your eyes at the "evils of corrupt authority" themes, hollywood-stereotype dramatis personae, and the stupidly indestructible main character. Just set your brain aside and enjoy the ride.

As to presentation, Podium Audio Inc. cast this project perfectly - enlisting Ray Porter for one of the best performances that I have ever heard from him. His spot-on diction, comfortable timbre/cadence, and pitch-perfect snarky tone for Cain's narration are paired with clever character voices (e.g. the straight-up excellent slightly effeminate portrayal of the pretentious 'X-37' implanted Artificial Intelligence). If given the choice between a text version (paper or eBook) of 'The Last Reaper: Book One' or this recorded iteration, choose this one every time.

Altogether, the audiobook rates 6/10-stars. I'm generally not a big fan of ridiculously OP characters and this book didn't change my mind (I won't be continuing with the 'Last Reaper' series). It was a somewhat silly, fun - if strikingly unoriginal - action-adventure.. for free, that is. If it leaves the 'Plus' catalog, pass. It's not worth your Credit.

Not Bad
