I really liked this
I quite enjoy Rachel Aaron's books and this was no exception for me. The story has great flow and I enjoyed the development of the three women in the story. The narrator has some weird pauses in sentences but had excellent differentiation in the voices. Overall it was an enjoyable listen and I jumped right into the second book.

Where was The Lord of the Rings?
I wanted to enjoy this book much more than I did. The premise and cast sounded fantastic. But the comparison to Lord of the Rings was misleading (aside from general fantasy elements and a journey) and the writing was not what it could have been, from info-dumps awkwardly shoved into dialogue to confusing/not organic character relationships, largely surrounding too-sweet Josephine. The final couple hours of the story were also chaotic, with too many “revelations” back to back, tying up some loose ends while creating more (I appreciate this is the first book in a series, but the lead into sequels was done in an unsatisfying way).
In summary, the book did not feel cohesive or as refined as I expected. I don’t feel that it delivered what was promised, and it was not worth the credit.
