Murder cases have the highest stakes and the biggest paydays, and they always mean Haller has to be at the top of his game. A mummified corpse, over half a century old, is found in the cellar of an abandoned building in a remote New Mexico ghost town. Corrie Swanson is assigned what seems to her a throwaway case: to ID the body and determine cause of death. She brings archaeologist Nora Kelly to excavate the body and lend her expertise to the investigation, and together they uncover something unexpected and shocking: the deceased apparently died in agony, in a fetal position, skin coming off in sheets, with a rictus of horror frozen on his face. Hidden on the corpse lies a 16th-century Spanish gold cross.

Description
“One of the finest legal thrillers of the last decade” (Associated Press)
Lincoln Lawyer Mickey Haller must defend himself against murder charges in the heart-stopping new thriller from number one New York Times best-selling author Michael Connelly.
On the night he celebrates a big win, defense attorney Mickey Haller is pulled over by police, who find the body of a former client in the trunk of his Lincoln. Haller is immediately charged with murder but can’t post the exorbitant $5 million bail slapped on him by a vindictive judge.
Mickey elects to represent himself and is forced to mount his defense from his jail cell in the Twin Towers Correctional Center in downtown Los Angeles. All the while he needs to look over his shoulder — as an officer of the court, he is an instant target, and he makes few friends when he reveals a corruption plot within the jail. But the bigger plot is the one against him. Haller knows he’s been framed, whether by a new enemy or an old one.
As his trusted team, including his half-brother, Harry Bosch, investigates, Haller must use all his skills in the courtroom to counter the damning evidence against him. Even if he can obtain a not-guilty verdict, Mickey understands that it won’t be enough. In order to be truly exonerated, he must find out who really committed the murder and why. That is the law of innocence.
In his highest stakes case yet, the Lincoln Lawyer fights for his life and proves again why he is “a worthy colleague of Atticus Finch...in the front of the pack in the legal thriller game” (Los Angeles Times).
Ce que les critiques en disent
"The Night Fire offers more than a few incendiary surprises." (Paula L. Woods, Los Angeles Times)
"A virtuoso performance...The Night Fire glows with the instincts and intelligence Bosch and Ballard bring to their pursuit of the truth." (Collette Bancroft, Tampa Bay Times)
"One of the greatest crime writers of all time...Connelly continues to deliver winner after winner, year in and year out...reading one of his books is an experience unlike anything else the genre has to offer." (Ryan Steck, Crimereads)

Great story
Holds your interest from start to finish. Teaches you how the court and juries are run. How the justice system functions. The manipulations the lawyers use can be scary. The suspense is ongoing through the whole story. The narrator Peter Giles is superb. Will listen to it again in the future.

A law unto himself! Great read
Talk about high stakes! Connelly's writing and plot are pretty sharp! This one (almost) feels like a penultimate series finale! Having read all the Lincoln Lawyer books, I'm loving how there's enough history with the character and Connelly's LA to dip back and bring a few old heroes and villains from previous books and follow up with them in the present. I love it when new books really fully acknowledge the history and previous cases. Previous cases to figure prominently in this one, but it's still breaks new ground. Though I felt it ended a *bit* suddenly, I couldn't turn it off. Peter Giles is awesome, and along with Titus Welliver for the Bosch books are my favourite performers, and he makes Mickey his own. Matthew McConna--who? (well, he's good, Giles is better) Lastly, this was the first Lincoln Lawyer novel I got the moment it came out, and I felt a visceral reaction when Haller hears about COVID 19's outbreak on the news. That moment feels locked in time and a great backdrop to the court action. Looking forward to everything that Connelly is involved with!

Very disappointed how political the back half of thos book went. some of it didn't even make sense at the point he added it in. the last view booms that have come out from the author took some subtle political shots but this one went to far. When Politics Ruin a Mediocre Book
One of my formerly favorite authors. First half of the book is okay- not as exciting as the usual Lincoln's- and then BAM! Connelly goes and begins an ever-increasing political tirade that has no place in the story. I'm disgusted . 50% of the population will be very angry after listening to this book. Mickey is back
The Law of Innocence is book number 7 in the Lincoln Lawyer series of courtroom mysteries by the #1 New York Times Best-Selling and Award-Winning author Michael Connelly. I am a huge Connelly fan, as you may remember, and I was thrilled endlessly by this latest novel. With his most recent books featuring Harry Bosch and earlier this year Jack McAvoy, it was quite the time to check in on Mickey. Well, he is not doing that great. Our favorite defense attorney Mickey Haller is pulled over by an LAPD officer for what at first seems to be a routine traffic stop, but, when blood starts to drip from the Linconln's trunk, things are getting ugly fast and he finds himself in jail. To clear his name, Mickey must defend his own person, playing double roles, as the defendant and council. A question still stands, we all know that Mickey is a great lawyer and a decent father, but, is he also a cold-blooded murderer? After his excellent performance of Fair Warning, talented actor, narrator and voice-over artist Peter Giles steps back into Mickey's shoes and delivers another strong narrative experience for the listener. He infuses the story with urgency and intensity, he reads, he acts, he is 100% involved and fights for his life, just like Mickey does. The Law of Innocence is another eloquent example for why Michael Connelly is one of the most respected and loved authors out there. With the stakes set so high right from the beginning, we are left almost breathless for the rest of the story, rooting for Mickey and trying to understand how he got himself in this particular situation. Great story so far but....
Why do celebrities try to disenfranchise their fans by taking a political side. The included bias against Trump and Fox News is very unnecessary to the story and left a bad taste in my mouth. I continued listening because the story was great but I expected better from Connelly. Maximize your readership and don’t turn people off to take Jabs at peoples sensibilities.

You had to ruin this book Michael
Good story until jury selection. You had to get your political swipes in. Not every Trump supporter looks the way you assume they do. Moronic decision making there Michael. I happen to not be religious but you sure had assumptions about religious people also. How could you be so stupid as to get political in your book. Put a bad taste in my mouth. Dumb.. really dumb. I want my money back.
