In 1922, Count Alexander Rostov is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, and is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Rostov, an indomitable man of erudition and wit, has never worked a day in his life, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel’s doors. Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery.

Among the most celebrated and beloved novels of 2021, Anthony Doerr’s gorgeous third novel is a triumph of imagination and compassion, a soaring story about children on the cusp of adulthood in worlds in peril, who find resilience, hope—and a book. In Cloud Cuckoo Land, Doerr has created a magnificent tapestry of times and places that reflects our vast interconnectedness—with other species, with each other, with those who lived before us, and with those who will be here after we’re gone.

Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results. But like science, life is unpredictable.

Description
#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER
More than ONE MILLION copies sold
A TODAY Show Read with Jenna Book Club Pick
A New York Times Notable Book, and Chosen by Oprah Daily, Time, NPR, The Washington Post and Barack Obama as a Best Book of the Year
The bestselling author of A Gentleman in Moscow and Rules of Civility and master of absorbing, sophisticated fiction returns with a stylish and propulsive novel set in 1950s America
In June, 1954, eighteen-year-old Emmett Watson is driven home to Nebraska by the warden of the juvenile work farm where he has just served fifteen months for involuntary manslaughter. His mother long gone, his father recently deceased, and the family farm foreclosed upon by the bank, Emmett's intention is to pick up his eight-year-old brother, Billy, and head to California where they can start their lives anew. But when the warden drives away, Emmett discovers that two friends from the work farm have hidden themselves in the trunk of the warden's car. Together, they have hatched an altogether different plan for Emmett's future, one that will take them all on a fateful journey in the opposite direction—to the City of New York.
Spanning just ten days and told from multiple points of view, Towles's third novel will satisfy fans of his multi-layered literary styling while providing them an array of new and richly imagined settings, characters, and themes.
Ce que les critiques en disent
“[A] mischievous, wise and wildly entertaining novel . . . Towles goes all in on the kind of episodic, exuberant narrative haywire found in myth or Homeric epic . . . Each [character], Towles implies, is the central protagonist of an ongoing adventure that is both unique and universal . . . remarkably buoyant . . . permeated with light, wit, youth . . . Towles has snipped off a minuscule strand of existence—10 wayward days—and when we look through his lens we see that this brief interstice teems with stories, grand as legends.”—Chris Batcheldor, New York Times Book Review
“Not only is it one of the most beautifully written books I have ever picked up, it’s a story about hope, friendship and companionship in a time when we need it so much . . . Towles brilliantly captures the inner reality of each [character] with profound and poetic prose. All eight of them are incredible forces in literature . . . Amor Towles is one of those authors that I think will become a Steinbeck of our generation and [...] I think The Lincoln Highway will be a classic that we will read for years to come.”—Jenna Bush Hager, Read With Jenna book club
“[A] real joyride . . . hitch onto this delightful tour de force and you'll be pulled straight through to the end, helpless against the inventive exuberance of Towles' storytelling . . . The Lincoln Highway is elegantly constructed and compulsively readable . . . action-packed . . . There's so much to enjoy in this generous novel packed with fantastic characters [...] and filled with digressions, magic tricks, sorry sagas, retributions, and the messy business of balancing accounts.”—NPR.org

Amor Towles has become one of my favourite storytellers. This novel did not disappoint. His stories transport you to another time and you can imagine yourself there walking among the characters as though you are part of their world. I will no doubt listen to this one again as I have done all his books.

I thoroughly enjoyed every chapter of this book and looked forward to every chance I had to listen to it. The narrator, Edoardo Ballerini, was exceptional! Amor Towles is One of the Finest Writers of our Time
Amor Towles is possibly my favourite writer. He takes many years to write a single novel, but the result is sublime. There is not a single word that is filler, and every detail has been sculpted to perfection.
Each character’s voice is unique, as it would be in real life. Every scene is described so that we have not the slightest difficulty picturing it. His work is complex, compelling, and leaves the reader with a sense of fullness much like listening to an exquisite piece of music, or eating a delicious, perfectly cooked meal.
I have read Lincoln Highway twice. Now I am going to reread a Gentleman in Moscow and Rules of Civility. I await his next book with a sense of yearning.

Amor Towles never disappoints
Mr Towles has the gift of story telling. This story, with its delightful characters, is told from the middle, the beginning and through to the end and is proof of his engaging writing style.
This audio edition is excellent. The narrator does the characters well making it easy to follow the conversations. And the addition of the female narrator of the spunky Sally for some of the chapters was perfect. A great listen.

I'm totally opposite
It took me more than a month to finish A Gentleman In Moscow. I finished this book in 2 days. AGIM was just....so slow for 2/3 of the book. By the time I was done, I had it on 2.8 speed to hurry the book along. However, with The Lincoln Highway, I was surprised when it was over. I'm aware that I'm totally opposite of most reviewers, but this was much better and interesting than A Gentleman In Moscow
I enjoyed the multiple narrators and POVs. Like I say, I finished this book in 2 days. I just...found it interesting. I know I'm in the minority, but it's OK..

A story you can’t put down
Amor Towles delivers another epic page-turner with The Lincoln Highway. The plot, setting, and characters are masterfully written. It is one of those books, like the author’s previous offerings, Rules of Civility and A Gentleman in Moscow, that is an extreme pleasure to read and leaves you with a longing for the story to continue after the final page. In my opinion, Amor Towles is one of the best authors in contemporary literature today.

Amor Towles does it again!
This book is my favorite read of 2021–actually in a long time. I had loved “A Gentleman in Moscow” and was not expecting to enjoy “The Lincoln Highway” quite as much. Towles manipulates character and the various story lines like a high wire juggler. I enjoyed the many voices. His classical references are masterful without being tedious. They are the warp to the textured weft of this expertly crafted book. He is a fabulous writer and story teller.

Really wanted to like it
Amor Towles is one of my favorite authors. I loved Rules of civility and Gentleman in Moscow even more. Unfortunately this book did not grab my attention. Narration was good and story line definitely had potential, still I found it to be boring and at the end wasn’t sure what was the point of the story.

Great for a road trip
Loved the story throughout but found the ending slightly problematic. Need to think some more about it, Which isn't all bad.

Best book of 2021 for me.
Mr. Towles is a true wordsmith. I was hooked on the first sentence of this book and could not stop listening. When It ended, I was a bit stunned. It seemed to end abruptly, leaving me to wonder if there, (hopefully), be a sequel.
