A great read!
This story was a very entertaining blend of romance, character development and living history. I am really looking forward to listening to the others in this series and other material by this author! The reader of this audible version was effective without being intrusive.

strong female characters are not a modern phenomen
The main character is Melissande, a strong willed and high spirited young woman living at the time of the Third Crusade. In medieval times, women rarely had control of their own fate, and were married off for the advantage of their lord, family or to consolidate properties or alliances. Melissande defies conventional mores, negotiating land and her own stone quarry's contracts with shrewd acumen. Her husband was presumed dead in the Battle of Accra, and Melissande boldly defied the Lord of the land to determine her own fate and the security of her children. An admirable heroine, a historically accurate setting and very believable characters are created by author Jane Ann McLachlan. The surprise ending is skilfully crafted without straining belief. Narrator Lilian Rachel's voice is very well suited to the story and enhances the dramatic impact. An excellent stand alone novel, but if you have the opportunity of reading McLachlan, 's previous book "The Sorrow Stone" first, it will add depth to your very enjoyable reading experience.
