Each chapter begins abruptly without indicating the shift of perspective or location. Pikes performance saves the tale as I’d listen to her read the phone book :-) there are two central characters but no meaningful connection to the two tales - it would have been a stronger story from the perspective of the apprentice- and not being in the confusing secondary storyline. In all fun with magic in a mythical land.

I expected more from the apprentice's story arc but an enjoyable story nonetheless. The narrator's voices were really well done.

The story was so abridged as to hardly make sense. I adore Ms. Pike, and I've often said I'd listen to her read the phone book. Next time, I'll opt for the phone book.
Perhaps an unabridged version might be less confusing. What is the point of abridging a decent story anyway? If the author wanted it short, she'd have written it that way.
