The book steps through the typical journey from individual developer to eventually CTO. The choice between the management and technology tracks is explored well. It also helped explain why managers at tech companies need to be technical and breaks down what that might mean.
The guidance at each step is clear and actionable. Early on there is fantastic suggestions for one on ones and mentoring. Later as the options open up it becomes ideas to explore and systems to consider.
The author does a great job showing the biases and uncertainty throughout the book. They share success and failures. While much of the content is based on personal experience, the reasoning and thinking is also shared.
If it is not clear, I really liked this book. So why not a 5 stars? I struggled with this. The book is so relatable that I almost felt like I was not learning. The format definitely threw me off. At times it feels a bit shallow and makes up by providing all the references if you want to go deeper.
