Description

Growing on just one and a half acres, owners Jean-Martin and Maude-Helène feed more than 200 families through their thriving CSA and seasonal market stands and supply their signature mesclun salad mix to dozens of local establishments. The secret of their success is the low-tech, high-yield production methods they've developed by focusing on growing better rather than growing bigger, making their operation more lucrative and viable in the process.

The Market Gardener is a compendium of proven horticultural techniques and innovative growing methods. This complete guide is packed with practical information on:

  • Setting-up a micro-farm by designing biologically intensive cropping systems, all with negligible capital outlay
  • Farming without a tractor and minimizing fossil fuel inputs through the use of the best hand tools, appropriate machinery, and minimum tillage practices
  • Growing mixed vegetables systematically with attention to weed and pest management, crop yields, harvest periods, and pricing approaches

Inspired by the French intensive tradition of maraichage and by iconic American vegetable grower Eliot Coleman, author and farmer Jean-Martin shows by example how to start a market garden and make it both very productive and profitable. Making a living wage farming without big capital outlay or acreages may be closer than you think.

Jean-Martin Fortier is a passionate advocate of strong local food systems and founder of Les Jardins de la Grelinette, an internationally recognized model for successful bio-intensive micro-farming.

Great book!

At first I wasn't sure what to expect from an audio book about gardening but this one was set up in such a way it was easy to visualize the topics at hand.

Great advice. Buy the paper version.

Fantastic and encouraging. Lots of practical ideas but the narrator drove me crazy. The last syllable of each sentence drops in pitch so it sounds like he's whining. I had to speed up the narration speed just to finish. Unfortunately, I will never listen to it again.

Narration is so boring....

If your interested in learning how to farm on a small scale, there is great information here - I suggest reading it though. The narrator is so boring that I can’t finish the book after 6 attempts and hundreds of other books completed.

Very in-depth!

I listened to this as preparation for an interview with the author. I was only familiar with Jean Martin Fortier from his Instagram. I was incredibly impressed with how in-depth this book was! I feel it is a great reference that should be came back to again and again, it’s margins filled with notes and dog-eared pages!

Good book, annoying narrator

Throughout the entire book the narrator pronounced the name of the author’s business wrong. It would have been quick to find out how to say it right but instead you have to listen to him repeat it incorrectly over and over.

Informative book but distracting reader

Countless reader errors and quirks were distracting throughout the book. Clearly his tongue was getting tied with difficult to pronounce words or certain consonant combinations or a blatant mispronunciation such as etcetera (etc).

Not that great for Home Gardener

A lot of other reviewers said that this book would be great even if you are not a market gardener. Although there are some definitely meaningful things to learn in the book (I think the best part is actually the appendix) it is not really as applicable to the home Gardener as some other people have stated. I have a very large home Garden where I'm trying to grow virtually all of my produce for my family for the entire year. For this reason, I thought that many things in the book would be applicable for me. I realize after reading it that there's way too many things that are not practical or useful for a home gardener. That being said I still enjoyed the book and learned quite a bit.

Useful and digestible format but narrating issues

I think I digested most of what was important, which is always a question/concern for informational books vs reading directly. I've listened to another book by the same narrator without issue, but this one has some repeated lines/redundancies for some reason.

Narrator issues

Narrator sounded bored at first chapters of the book.
Narrator used unfortunate breathing patterns that affected the phrasing. This was sometimes distracting enough to necessitate re-listening to the section.
Narrator mispronounced part of the French name of the farm (that is the subject of this book) kind of as if "jardin" was a Spanish word. This happened over and over, as the name comes up many times in each chapter.

Great book

Awesome book for any gardener! Definitely will change the way my family gardens after listening to this book. Very helpful to have the printed version as well. I will be going back to this book for years to come!
