INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - The Read With Jenna Today Show Book Club Pick!

""A story of love and hope as interweaving characters display: how all moments, big and small, can measure a life. If you want joy, love, romance, and hope—read with us."" —Jenna Bush Hager

A luminous, spirit-lifting blockbuster that asks: would you choose to find out the length of your life?

Eight ordinary people. One extraordinary choice.

It seems like any other day. You wake up, drink a cup of coffee, and head out.

But today, when you open your front door, waiting for you is a small wooden box. The contents of this mysterious box tells you the exact number of years you will live.

From suburban doorsteps to desert tents, every person on every continent receives the same box. In an instant, the world is thrust into a collective frenzy. Where did these boxes come from? What do they mean? Is there truth to what they promise?

As society comes together and pulls apart, everyone faces the same shocking choice: Do they wish to know how long they’ll live? And, if so, what will they do with that knowledge?

The Measure charts the dawn of this new world through an unforgettable cast of characters whose decisions and fates interweave with one another: best friends whose dreams are forever entwined, pen pals finding refuge in the unknown, a couple who thought they didn’t have to rush, a doctor who cannot save himself, and a politician whose box becomes the powder keg that ultimately changes everything.

Enchanting and deeply uplifting, The Measure is an ambitious, invigorating story about family, friendship, hope, and destiny that encourages us to live life to the fullest.

There were negative reviews about this book, but like any work of fiction, you have to suspend your vision of reality and go along for the ride. It is a wonderful but also unfortunately, an accurate reaction to people’s need to judge others because of their differences. Read (listen) to it, it’s worth your time

Loved it

Everyone receives a box containing a string that predicts the length of their life. This novel explores the changes that knowledge precipitates in relationships of a group as well societal changes. Great narration.

I usually listen to my audio books whenever my hands are busy and my mind is idle. For this book, there were times I didn’t want to listen to it because it was a little scary. Not Stephen King scary, but a reflection of human nature kind of scary. Anyways, I pushed through and genuinely loved it. I’m happy I finished it. Now I have to go read some fluffy stuff to balance out. The narrator did a fantastic job, also.

Beautiful

This book is clearly an eclectic allegory of modern America, operating as a fluid stand in for covid, the 2016 presidency, post-911, and a number of other less salient social and political issues. Overall, it's well done and rather clever. However, it falls short of it's full potential by remaining too slippery, too open. Although there is a liberal, even radical, tint to the book, it's also vague enough to appeal to anyone- are short stringers disabled folx during covid or are they anti-vaxxers? Either can be true. Even the stand in character for Trump is neutral-ish, all his awfulness implied rather than explicitly contended with. In short, the book is a clever idea in a people pleasing narrative. It's also overtly pro militarily, which is severely hypocritical given all it's flirtation with social justice issues and anti-state violence stance.

Good, not great
