Description

Benvenuto Cellini, master artisan of Renaissance Italy, once crafted a beautiful amulet prized for its unimaginable power - and untold menace. Now the quest to recover this legendary artifact depends upon one man: David Franco, a brilliant but skeptical young scholar at Chicago's world-renowned Newberry Library. What begins as a simple investigation spirals into a tale of dangerous intrigue as Franco races from the châteaux of France to the palazzos of Rome in a desperate search for the ultimate treasure and an answer to a riddle that has puzzled mankind since the beginning of time. Aided by a beautiful young Florentine harboring dark secrets, pursued by deadly assassins, and battling demons of his own, Franco must ultimately confront an evil greater than anything conjured in his worst nightmares.

I liked it

I don't know, I thought it was pretty good!
Here's the thing. Robert Masello writes a very specific genre of book. They're thrillers typically divided between two time periods, with the present-time characters trying to solve a mystery tied to the past. There is almost always the inclusion of fictionalized versions of historical figures, and a blatant fantasy/magic/supernatural element. They all follow that formula. If you going in knowing that, you can enjoy it for what it is, a silly but highly entertaining and surprisingly not-badly-written read.
In the Medusa Amulet, the main historical figure was the artist Cellini. I won't spoil it by telling you who else shows up! The supernatural element involves "immortality," and the mystery, obviously, involves the search for the Medusa amulet.
The characters are pretty well written, actually, and there was definitely a sense of urgency in the plot (albeit a little contrived). Like I said, I thought it was pretty good! And it had a nice ending, which I really appreciate.
I had to take a star off for story because I actually really dislike immortality plots (I'm looking at you, Tuck, Everlasting), but if that's your thing, you can stick the star back on.

Absolute escapism into an intriguing story

I adore great simultaneous stories with a well constructed cast of characters. The first chapter does not prepare you for what you are going to get into. It is good but I did not see the potential at first. I remember starting then turning to another Audible story because I thought it would be dry. As soon as Cellini's story started I was hooked.

Excellent

One of his best! But then they are all great and provided me with hours of enjoyment.

The Medusa Amulet

I nearly didn’t finish the book. It seemed too much sci-fi but I continued and I am glad I did.
