All legal proceedings against him have been stayed. The mounted police investigate the Vermillion incident and find Matt Crawford to be innocent of all killings in Canada, up to and including Hunter Talbot, and one U.S. Pinkerton, Thomas Lierpp, a.k.a. Miles Ranthorp. Freed and allowed to remain in Canada, Matt Crawford travels great distances to find work. It soon becomes clear to him that he has only one option left, and that is to return to law enforcement.
