First published in the 1830s, The Mudfog Papers is a humorous collection of stories and sketches set in the fictional town of Mudfog. A gentle mockery of some of the intellectual societies at the time – particularly the British Association for the Advancement of Science – the narratives in this anthology revolve around the Mudfog Society for the Advancement of Everything, characterised through its eccentric (and sometimes foolish) members, pseudo-scientific theories and bizarre inventions. In many ways, The Mudfog Papers is a delightful continuation of The Pickwick Papers, and again cements Dickens’s status as a master of satire.
