Description

In recent years, the common perception of the Neanderthals has been transformed, thanks to new discoveries and paradigm-shattering scientific innovations. It turns out that the Neanderthals' behavior was surprisingly modern: they buried the dead, cared for the sick, hunted large animals in their prime, harvested seafood, and communicated with spoken language. Meanwhile, advances in DNA technologies are compelling us to reassess the Neanderthals' place in our own past.

For hundreds of thousands of years, Neanderthals evolved in Europe parallel to Homo sapiens evolving in Africa, and, when both species made their first forays into Asia, the Neanderthals may even have had the upper hand. In this important volume, Dimitra Papagianni and Michael A. Morse compile the first full chronological narrative of the Neanderthals' dramatic existence - from their evolution in Europe to their expansion to Siberia, their subsequent extinction, and ultimately their revival in popular novels, cartoons, cult movies, and television commercials.

Enlightening Treatise. Lazy Presentation.

It has been many years since I studied anthropology as an undergraduate BSc student. The husband & wife tandem of Oxford/Cambridge PhDs Michael A. Morse and Demitra Papagianni provide a summary of updated research regarding these fascinating hominids - that evolved separately from homo sapiens. The writing is clear, the research is explained nicely, and the book structure is like a course syllabus. I am a bit disappointed that research into other offshoots of the Genus *homo* - like the diminuitive Flores subspecies - is largely ignored, but found the book otherwise edifying.

As to production: Reader Nigel Patterson actually narrates the book flawlessly - but sound engineers inexplicably allow the sound of Mr. Patterson turning pages to occasionally remain audible. The sound mixing is suspect.

Factoring in the deficiencies in quality control, this recording of 'The Neanderthals Rediscovered' merits 7.5 stars out of 10. A text version of the book might suit better for serious academics looking for a consumable addition to their library.. but merely "interested" readers - like me - will do fine investing the time on this audiobook.
Bottom Line: The book was an interesting and serviceable 'Plus' option.. but spend your Credit elsewhere should they ask for one.
