Description
Bram Stoker kept secret a tale even more terrifying than Dracula.
It begins among the Carpathian peaks, when an intrepid explorer discovers a mysterious golden box. She brings it back with her to the foggy streets of Victorian London, unaware of its dangerous power…or that an evil beyond imagining has already taken root in the city.
Stoker, a successful theater manager but frustrated writer, is drawn into a deadly web spun by the wealthy founders of a mission house for the poor. Far from a safe haven, the mission harbors a dark and terrifying secret.
To save the souls of thousands, Stoker - aided by the explorer and a match girl grieving the loss of her child - must pursue an enemy as ancient as the Saharan sands where it originated. Their journey will take them through the city’s overgrown graveyards and rat-infested tunnels and even onto the maiden voyage of the world’s first “unsinkable” ship…

A little cheesy, a lot awesome
I loved it. I'm a fan of that very specific subgenre of historical mystery that involves fictionalized versions of real life characters battling serial killers in bizarre and often otherworldly situations. Yeah, it's actually a thing! And Robert Masello excels. This was a delight from start to finish, with a wonderfully weird plot, fiendish villains, heroes you can really root for, and an excellent narrator to bring it all to life. Yes, it was a little hokey, a little ridiculous, but that's part of what made it so fun. And the writing was still good.
Unequivocal two thumbs up.

Good story helped by great narration
I liked the story a lot. interesting characters, but not compelling. I don’t know what or who I was rooting for. The excellent narration added an enigmatic feeling not found in the words themselves.

Loved this book!!!
I have had this novel in my collection for awhile and FINALLY listened. I love these old type mummy type novels and the mystic around them. This novel did not disappoint. Great period piece and exotic surroundings - if you like this you will enjoy this book.

I enjoyed this
As I began listening to my first story by Robert Masello, I was relieved to find it so well-written, and the pace just perfect. I had to get used to Mr. Furlong’s very rapid reading, and after a while, it ceased to get in the way of my listening enjoyment.

I just couldn't get into it because of narrator.
The narrator's rhythm and cadence just put me on edge. Granted, this is completely subjective and might be just fine for other listeners but I just couldn't stand his herky jerky style. I had to give up after a few hours.

Change can be a bad thing!
This book was a typical Masello story in the vein of Einstein Prophecy and the Jekyll Revelation, combining past facts with fictions, and mixing in some supernatural elements. I really enjoy these types of stories so I am a fan. There’s just one problem. The above mentioned books were read by the always fantastic Christopher Lane, and this one isn’t. I’m not sure why the change was made but it was a huge mistake. While the narrator doesn’t do a bad job, he’s no Mr. Lane. So while I’m happy with the story, the audiobook could have been so much better.
Did I mention I was disappointed with the change in narrators?

Truly exhilarating adventure back in time!!
My first step into the mind of Robert Masello has me clamoring for another of his adventures. The Night Crossing was a fantastic journey back in time to the late 1800s on into the turn of the century. I've read many fictional tales based on factual religious, scientific, and historical components and enjoyed them immensely. Masello has gone a step further by allowing you to encounter some of London's richly talented members of stage and print as they were as the 1800s came to an end and the 20th century was coming into its own. Masello's use of Bram Stoker as one of the story's protagonists allowed you to tag along with him in his personal and social circles at that period in time. That element provided a magically immersive backdrop to the adventure you went on with Bram and Mina. A chilling tale that literary lovers of fictional adventures that clash with the truth will likely enjoy as much as I did.

Very Enjoyable
It probably was the history and whom it was about combined with the fiction that made this book so enjoyable for me.

Relentless
You never know what will come of a fictional story with a real life protagonist. Fear not. Bram Stoker is perfect for this story.
The suspense IS relentless. From the early pages to the last pages the plot twists and turns become tornadic (I know, not a word), and settles back to simply (simply?) suspense.
Beginning in Romania and ending - of course - in London, the main female protagonist is a power unto herself. Bram comes to the story a bit later but in the midst of a drama - introducing the second plot and involving a second female protagonist - which can't be a subplot cause it stands alone, only connected to the other plot by a golden box.
Extended life, twice deaths, theater, graveyard, other creepiness, and the Titanic conspire to rivet you to the page (sorry - earpiece.) The use of the Titanic was disconcerting at first, but it did work.
If you like historical fiction, you'll find this opus uniquely suited to your taste. If historical fiction isn't your thing, read it for the mystery - which includes the supernatural. What else do you expect from a story about Bram Stoker? I'll reread this book a while after the nightmares end.

Edge of your seat with familiar characters
Even if you aren't a fan of Bram Stoker's "Dracula" you can enjoy this audiobook. The reader is excellent, the characters are compelling, and the historical figures depicted will be very familiar if you like the Victorian Era. Very exciting, full of mummies, soul suckers, vampires, and adventure. I highly recommend it!

Perfect until the end commenced
Overall it was well written and performed really well but that last part about the titanic was awful. It should have ended chapters before the actual end, truly ruined my time and I had to skip chapters to just get to the final conclusions.

Great Weave!!!
I love the way the story uses fact, fiction and description. This is a must listen. The narrator makes the story move seamlessly. Can’t wait to hear the next one;-)

Wanted to like it more
It was a really interesting story, tying together so many elements of known fiction with the authors unique interpretation. But it was so incredibly long and drawn out. The narrator was unfortunately quite monotonous, which made it hard to pay attention and get excited about even the really exciting parts.
