A REESE'S BOOK CLUB PICK

A #1
New York Times bestseller, Wall Street Journal Best Book of the Year, and soon to be a major motion picture, this unforgettable novel of love and strength in the face of war has enthralled a generation.

With courage, grace, and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of World War II and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women's war. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France—a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.

A very good story told well. I had to pause it often to catch my breath-there are some harrowing moments but absolutely worth listening to.

There is SO much I don't know about the second World war, and it's a favourite topic of my mother. having recently travelled to Poland and seen the recovery there, I was developing more of an interest myself. I expected a bit more from this book, I guess.
The story was gruelling for the characters, which was to be expected, but I feel that there were Themes the author focused on more than she should. The repetition of the themes got a bit tired. Isobel's primary motivation through her entire life was the fact her family had not been overtly loving. Every character trait came back to that, and the author mentioned it every time the narrative focused on her. The same descriptions were used for her again and again like we were going to forget she had always been "impetuous " if it isn't mentioned in the next chapter.

German prison guards yelled "schnell!" and nothing else, ever. Does the word "fast" fit every situation? Every time a hat is mentioned in a French context it is a beret...suit and beret, slacks and beret... did French wear no other headwear in that time period?
Did French generals address the French via the BBC (the British broadcasting Corporation?). if the French could listen to the BBC why did this only happen the once?
I was left with the impression that the author read a single book on the war, and made the rest up with partially understood stereotypes.
All troops were either "allies" or American... because American troops are important, and have to be mentioned specifically, but everyone else are just "troops", not British units, or Canadian... unless it was individuals she referred to.

the only character I connected with was the "Survivor" in 1995. She seemed complex and self aware.

it's an emotional book, but I really didn't immerse myself in the story much. maybe something in me rejects a story the focuses so much on suffering and less so on the world. I understand that the character would not know what is going on, so a local perspective is acceptable, I just would have liked to know more about the what and why of the factors that effected her life. The character Beck could have been employed for that, but that would have been imposed exposition.

Anyway, I felt the book lacked verisimilitude, and focused on flat facets of character in all but one person. Your mileage may vary.

A surviror the second World war.

Rarely does a book make me cry. This book had me hanging onto every chapter and in a puddle of tears. Many heart-wrenching and touching moments from the perspective of a sister, mother, daughter and best friend. I wasn't sure I'd enjoy this time piece but was so glad I took a chance on it.

Surprisingly Wonderful

Incredible

The story was beautifully written and Polly Stone was an amazing narrator. Her proper pronunciation of French places, people etc. and great accents really added to the story. This is quite possibly my favourite book!
