The Ones We Burn
3/5 stars. I had really really high hopes for this book tbh I was really looking forward to it and, I'm gonna be honest, I was a bit disappointed. I do love a good enemies to lovers trope and this book did do a decent job on that. However, for the fact that the characters were supposed to be like 18 ish, and had gone through a lot of hardships in life, they felt way younger than that and that kind of took me out of the story. The first like half of the book was like 3/5, I was kinda bored, then the next 2/3 was pretty good like 3.5/5 or 4/5, but the ending was not very good. **Spoilers ahead** I'm gonna be honest, Ranka should have died. It didn't really make sense for her not to and it would have been a way better ending if she had considering thats what like the entire book was working up too. I do enjoy a happy ending but it could have been a good, satisfying ending if she had died. Also the "twist" of the dude guard guy being the leader of the hands was really obvious. I am not one to try and guess ahead since I like to try and be surprised but even I saw that one coming from a mile away when they couldn't find his body for like 10 chapters. Overall, it was a decent read albeit decently long for the story. I would definitely have enjoyed more of the politics of the witches and humans etc from another pov, I think that would have added to the story a lot. I did enjoy the gay enemies to lovers too as I don't see that a lot.
