À propos de cet audio

A powerful story based on true events surrounding Donaldina Cameron and other brave women who fought to help Chinese-American women escape discrimination and slavery in the late 19th century in California.

When Donaldina Cameron arrives at the Occidental Mission Home for Girls in 1895, she intends to teach sewing skills to young Chinese women immigrants, but, within days, she discovers that the job is much more complicated than perfect stitches and even hems. San Francisco has a dark side, one where a powerful underground organization - the criminal tong - brings Chinese young women to America to sell them as slaves. With the help of Chinese interpreters and the Chinatown police squad, Donaldina becomes a tireless social reformer to stop the abominable slave and prostitution trade.

Mei Lien believes she is sailing to the "Gold Mountain" in America to become the wife of a rich Chinese man. Instead she finds herself sold into prostitution - beaten, starved, and forced into an opium addiction. It is only after a narrow escape that she hears of the mission home and dares to think there might be hope for a new life.

I loved the historic realness. the voice of the narrator seemed like it was underwater.

weird voice but great story

The information about the time was interesting, but it read more like a factual book not a fictional novel based on fact. Didn’t really enjoy the narration either. Does make me want to hear more about Dolly Cameron though.

It just needed more

Excellent historical story. I learned a great deal right to the end with the authors closing remarks.
It was a challenge for the performer to do so many accents.
However, I quickly adjusted. I recommend sticking with it.
So much that most of us do not know.

A valuable read

The writing was cliche and the unimaginative. There were a few discrepancies in the details. The story was interesting and historical. It’s was too long for the story it told. I liked many of the characters.

A well written but sad story about human trafficking. It kept me interested until the very last page.

Beautiful but sad story

The book is based on the life of Donaldina Cameron and the Chinese girls she helped to rescue from the slavery in the beginning of the 20th century in San Francisco. I have expected more from the book. I feel that the story lacked a bit more depth of the characters, even the main characters seems as one-dimensional, and the Chinese girls were described mostly as a group not as individuals. In the end, I found this book rather simplistic, without a deeper inside of the historical characters and the event.

Expected more from the story

Although the story took place in a different era it still read as a Discriminatory piece, of the Chinese community. I was completely offended. I couldn’t finish.
