Description

American-born spy and code-breaker extraordinaire Maggie Hope secretly navigates Nazi-occupied France to find two brave women during the darkest days of World War II in the latest novel in this New York Times best-selling series - "a treat for WWII buffs and mystery lovers alike" (Booklist, on The Prime Minister's Secret Agent).

Maggie Hope has come a long way since serving as a typist for Winston Churchill. Now she's working undercover for the Special Operations Executive in the elegant but eerily silent city of Paris, where SS officers prowl the streets in their Mercedes and the Ritz is draped with swastika banners. Walking among the enemy is tense and terrifying, and even though she's disguised in chic Chanel, Maggie can't help longing for home.

But her missions come first. Maggie's half-sister, Elise, has disappeared after being saved from a concentration camp, and Maggie is desperate to find her - that is, if Elise even wants to be found. Equally urgent, Churchill is planning the Allied invasion of France, and SOE agent Erica Calvert has been captured, the whereabouts of her vital research regarding Normandy unknown. Maggie must risk her life to penetrate powerful circles and employ all her talents for deception and spycraft to root out a traitor, find her sister, and locate the reports crucial to planning D-Day in a deadly game of wits with the Nazi intelligence elite.

Ce que les critiques en disent

"You will grieve with Paris. You will be outraged by the destruction. You will be terrified for all the heroes, be there with them every step, and care desperately that they succeed and survive. And perhaps above all, like me, you will be overwhelmed with their sacrifice for the freedom we still enjoy." (Anne Perry, New York Times best-selling author of the Pitt and Monk Series)
"This has to be Maggie Hope's most exciting adventure yet. Vivid and fast-paced, crammed with authentic detail, The Paris Spy is an extraordinary trip through the edgy drama of wartime Paris, skillfully plotted and studded with cameos of real historical figures." (Jane Thynne, author of the Clara Vine series)
" The Paris Spy is a new mystery you won't put down until the absolutely stunning conclusion. Only Susan Elia MacNeal - and the extraordinary Maggie Hope - could wrap such a tale of courage and betrayal around a secret that will cost lives and honor to protect." (Charles Todd, New York Times best-selling author of the Inspector Ian Rutledge series and the Bess Crawford series)

Cliffhanger?

This was the latest of the Maggie Hope Mysteries. Seemed like the author was in a rush or something with this one. I've loved listening to the rest of the series full of intrigue and developed storylines. This one seemed flat and the ending seemed rushed. Not my favourite of the series.

British World War II historical novel

THE PARIS SPY is a very pleasant surprise for me. It is Book 7 in the Maggie Hope series, but is my introduction to the series. The story is gritty and realistic. Some reviewers complain about the narration which I think is wonderful.

Good book spoiled by bad narrator

I pre-ordered this, as I have with all of the author's books. I'm really thinking I should read the book rather than listen to the audiobook. The narrator is poor and creates quite a distraction. I went back to read my reviews of the previous books in the series and I've said this same thing in practically ever review. Maybe one of these days I'll learn.

The story itself was not bad. I found the last third of the book was non-put-down-able. Great suspense and action. The ending is interesting.

Sing-Song Narration

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I've have enjoyed the prior books in this series. I am having real problems listening to this one. The story is slow to develop with much time spent on small details while other elements in the story seem undeveloped. My mahor issue is the narration which has made this very difficult to listen to.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Her delivery does not change regardless of the events described. She has a very sing song presentation which makes it difficult to fully engage in the story.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Probably not.

this narrator is horrid!

the book is a little naive but okay enough, but the narrator is awful! she is so incredibly "sing-song"-ie. It feels like a 5th grader is reading it. for the last time, get a new narrator, or I'm done with Miss Maggie Hope.

The book was ok; the narrator was annoying

It's hard to fairly judge the book, as the narrator's thrumming rhythm became like a rumbling engine in my ears. She did a very good job with accents, foreign languages, and depicting the cast of characters. But her droning reading style almost caused me to give up a few times.

Sadly Disappointed

What disappointed you about The Paris Spy?

I loved the rest of the series, but this one was disappointing. The main character did not appear until well into the second chapter and the story did not really get rolling for some time after that. The plot was predictable except for the ending and the narration did not contribute anything. The ending was very unsatisfactory. So, overall, after waiting for this book to come out, I was disappointed enough that I do not know if I'll read another one in this series should there be one.

What do you think your next listen will be?

Unsure

Would you be willing to try another one of Susan Duerden’s performances?

No

one of the best Maggie Hope mysteries

I've been flying through the Maggie Hope series and enjoying them all but this one was a cut above the rest. constant tension, plot twists, exquisite new characters, and huge risks for old characters really made this a thrill!!

A Good Entry

This is a good entry on the series. I thought the characters were well developed and the reader is left with a complex ending. Perhaps a bit too much retrospect in the middle that could have been replaced with action....but overall, if you like the series, you will like this book.

Too much extraneous verbiage

I expect if I had seen the author’s outline before the completed book, it would have earned five stars. I was irritated and impatient however at all the detailed description of trees, buildings, artwork, facial hair, parks and roadways. In addition, those long passages in German and French could have been scratched. Lastly, it became difficult to identify all the characters with their multiple names: real, fake and code., often in multiple languages. Whew!
