America is a barren landscape of smoldering ashes, devoid of life except for those people still struggling to scratch out some type of existence. Amidst this destruction, a father and his young son walk, always toward the coast, but with no real understanding that circumstances will improve once they arrive. Still, they persevere, and their relationship comes to represent goodness in a world of utter devastation.

Rabbit, Run is the book that established John Updike as one of the major American novelists of his - or any other - generation. Its hero is Harry “Rabbit” Angstrom, a onetime high-school basketball star who on an impulse deserts his wife and son. He is 26 years old, a man-child caught in a struggle between instinct and thought, self and society, sexual gratification and family duty - even, in a sense, human hard-heartedness, and divine Grace. Though his flight from home traces a zigzag of evasion, he holds to the faith that he is on the right path.

For most of the last hundred years, Biloxi was known for its beaches, resorts, and seafood industry. But it had a darker side. It was also notorious for corruption and vice, everything from gambling, prostitution, bootleg liquor, and drugs to contract killings. The vice was controlled by small cabal of mobsters, many of them rumored to be members of the Dixie Mafia. Keith Rudy and Hugh Malco grew up in Biloxi in the sixties and were childhood friends, as well as Little League all-stars.

Created from more than forty hours of intimate conversations with Seán O’Hagan, it is a profoundly thoughtful exploration, in Cave’s own words, of what really drives his life and creativity. The book examines questions of faith, art, music, freedom, grief, and love. It draws candidly on Cave’s life, from his early childhood to the present day, his loves, his work ethic, and his dramatic transformation in recent years. From a place of considered reflection, Faith, Hope and Carnage offers ladders of hope and inspiration from a true creative visionary.

Winner of the 1973 National Book Award, Gravity's Rainbow is a postmodern epic, a work as exhaustively significant to the second half of the 20th century as Joyce's Ulysses was to the first. Its sprawling, encyclopedic narrative and penetrating analysis of the impact of technology on society make it an intellectual tour de force.

When did we begin to be as self-centered as we are today? At what point did we expect to have the right to determine our own lives? When did we first ask the question, how can I be free? It all began in the 1790s in a quiet university town in Germany when a group of playwrights, poets, and writers put the self at center stage in their thinking, writing, and their lives.
Auteur(s): Andrea Wulf
Description
The best-selling, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Road returns with the first of a two-volume masterpiece: The Passenger is the story of a salvage diver, haunted by loss, afraid of the watery deep, pursued for a conspiracy beyond his understanding, and longing for a death he cannot reconcile with God.
Look for Stella Maris, the second volume in The Passenger series, on sale December 6th, 2022.
1980, PASS CHRISTIAN, MISSISSIPPI: It is three in the morning when Bobby Western zips the jacket of his wet suit and plunges from the Coast Guard tender into darkness. His dive light illuminates the sunken jet, nine bodies still buckled in their seats, hair floating, eyes devoid of speculation. Missing from the crash site are the pilot’s flight bag, the plane’s black box, and the tenth passenger. But how? A collateral witness to machinations that can only bring him harm, Western is shadowed in body and spirit—by men with badges; by the ghost of his father, inventor of the bomb that melted glass and flesh in Hiroshima; and by his sister, the love and ruin of his soul.
Traversing the American South, from the garrulous barrooms of New Orleans to an abandoned oil rig off the Florida coast, The Passenger is a breathtaking novel of morality and science, the legacy of sin, and the madness that is human consciousness.
Ce que les critiques en disent
2023 Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction
"A beguiling, surpassingly strange novel by the renowned—and decidedly idiosyncratic—author of Blood Meridian (1982) and The Road (2006)… It’s all vintage McCarthy, if less bloody than much of his work: Having logged time among scientists as a trustee at the Santa Fe Institute, he’s now more interested in darting quarks than exploding heads…Plenty of his trademark themes and techniques are in evidence, from conspiracy theories…and shocking behavior…to flights of beautiful language…Enigmatic, elegant, extraordinary: a welcome return after a too-long absence."—Kirkus Reviews, Starred Review
“A rich story of an underachieving salvage diver in 1980 New Orleans... This thriller narrative is intertwined with the story of Western’s sister, Alicia… He dazzles with his descriptions of a beautifully broken New Orleans… The book’s many pleasures will leave readers aching for the final installment.”—Publishers Weekly"

I’ve not read the second novel in this series, and do not know how it will augment this novel. But I did not enjoy this nearly as much as Blood Meridian or Suttree. It just seems to be missing that magic I found in listening to those earlier McCarthy tales.

McCarthy's best novel yet.
I have read most of McCarthy's books and this one is his greatest triumph. It builds off all of his previous works: the profane perambulations of Suttree, the apocalyptic vision of Blood Meridian, the minimalism of the Border Trilogy, the deliberate but pondering pace of No Country, and the deep insight of the nature of love in The Road.
Where this novel excels over it's predecessors is in the it's crafting of dialogue and character creation. All of the characters, even the minor ones feel like real fleshed out human beings with authentic back stories like in a George Eliot novel.
McCarthy has also mastered his dialogue so that philosophical discourses smack of real conversation in a superior way to even Iris Murdoch. His beautiful tracts of descriptive narrative remain intact here describing everything from the Heartland of America, to the controls of a savage ship, to the Andalusian coastline.
It is McCarthy's Brothers Karamazov.

What can you say about one of the greatest writers of our generation that hasn’t been said before. This story moves you into his new realm. The narrating is flawless. The story flows over you like a warm
shower after a rough cool day outside in the wind. You want to save it but need to progress through one of the last ones from CM. Life isn’t perfect but then there’s a book by Cormac McCarthy.

The emperor has no clothes
I'm sorry. I love McCarthy's writing, but this was drivel. I made it all the way through but this is 13 hours of my life I will never get back. Simply pointless. Is he playing a joke on us? Was this just to see if his audience will pretend to find meaning or even a plot in this? I did not. The emperor has no clothes.
When I find an author that I like, I develop trust for them. I've read a half dozen books by McCarthy and he earned that trust. I pre-ordered this book based on that trust. That trust is lost. I won't do that again, and there is no way in heck that I will buy the next book in this series, Stella Maris. The idea of listening to 5 hours of that dreck makes me ill.

10% Story and 90% chatter.
I’m reading the other reviews that go on and on about how great this book is and I feel like its because of who wrote it. I love his other works too but this offering is terrible.
I was looking forward to starting it and kept waiting on it to become interesting but that never happened. Maybe it’s just so genius it’s beyond me but I don’t think so.
This isn’t a novel. It’s an attempt at esoteric philosophy that we are supposed to believe will connect in a coherent way at some point. It fails miserably.
I guess even the great ones can swing and miss sometimes.

Julia Whelans narration is really awful, and she narrates half of the book. Unsurprisingly, The Passenger itself had been absolutely stunning but I'm not sure if I will be able to finish in this format. Her wooden performance has sucked all of the magic out of what I'm hoping is a masterpiece.

Remarkable
As with previous McCarthy novels, The Passenger purports themes that are as unsettling as they are compelling. In his most dialogue-driven novel. McCarthy deals with matters of life and death…but mostly death. This book will help you understand that life is suffering. It will satisfy the curious mind. This book can make you reread Cant, explore physics and give you a different opinion on the Kennedy assassination.
It is a masterpiece.

McCarthy dealing w/ Mortality, Paranoia
Best Parts?
Hearing McCarthy describe Nagasaki, String Theory and his conspiracy-fueled discussion on JFK's assassination is but the beginning of the vast treasures this book imparts. Can't wait to read 2nd Volume for more. Possibly most stoic character McCarthy ever wrote but there's something beautiful & almost fatalistic to this gorgeously stark novel.

A very Cormac novel
The Passenger is a great novel for anyone who likes to dig as deep as they can into Cormac McCarthy’s writing and spend a good deal of time thinking about and researching what deeper meanings might lay behind the surface level writing. In fact, it feels like Cormac was doing this to his own writing while he wrote The Passenger, as the novel feels very much like an exploration of Cormac’s earlier writing by the writer himself. A very meta-McCarthy novel, heavy in allusion, often back to his own work, further building upon his statements that books are made out of books. A great read that will allow years of exploration and debate.
