Worshippers stream out of an Midwestern synagogue after sabbath services, unaware that only a hundred yards away, an expert marksman and avowed racist, antisemite and member of the Ku Klux Klan, patiently awaits, his hunting rifle at the ready. A riveting, cautionary tale rooted in history that continues to echo today, The Killer's Shadow is a terrifying and essential exploration of the criminal personality in the vile grip of extremism and what happens when rage-filled speech evolves into deadly action and hatred of the “other" is allowed full reign.

Two victims of the infamous Cleveland kidnapper share the story of their abductions, their decade in captivity, and their final, dramatic rescue. On May 6, 2013, Amanda Berry made headlines around the world when she fled a Cleveland area home and called 911, saying: “Help me, I’m Amanda Berry...I’ve been kidnapped, and I’ve been missing for 10 years". A horrifying story rapidly unfolded. Ariel Castro, a local school bus driver, had separately lured Berry, Gina DeJesus, and Michelle Knight to his home, where he kept them chained in the basement.

I order another bourbon, neat. This is the drink that will flip the switch. I don’t even know how I got here, to this place, to this point. Something is happening to me lately. I’m drinking too much. My sheets are soaking wet when I wake up from nightmares of decaying corpses. I order another drink and swig it, trying to forget about the latest case I can’t shake. Crime solving for me is more complex than the challenge of the hunt, or the process of piecing together a scientific puzzle. The thought of good people suffering drives me to the point of obsession.

Histoire
Dr. Al Carlisle, PhD, evaluated Ted Bundy for the Utah court in 1976. Ever since, Carlisle has painstakingly reconstructed Ted’s history through conversations with Bundy's friends, lovers, neighbors, investigators—and through Bundy's own words. The only book of its kind, I'm Not Guilty gives a thorough analysis of the facts of Bundy's life and crimes based on Carlisle's research. Then Carlisle enhances what is known about Bundy’s victims, the origins of the Entity, and Bundy's need to kill. This book helps to explain how a good person can become a serial killer.

Verteran investigative journalist Stevie Cameron first began following the story of missing women in 1998, when the odd newspaper piece appeared chronicling the disappearances of drug-addicted sex trade workers from Vancouver's notorious Downtown Eastside. It was not until February 2002 that pig farmer Robert William Pickton would be arrested, and 2008 before he was found guilty, on six counts of second-degree murder. These counts were appealed and in 2010, the Supreme Court of Canada rendered its conclusion.

Two men, each handsome and unusually adept at his chosen work, embodied an element of the great dynamic that characterized America’s rush toward the twentieth century. The architect was Daniel Hudson Burnham, the fair’s brilliant director of works and the builder of many of the country’s most important structures, including the Flatiron Building in New York and Union Station in Washington, D.C. The murderer was Henry H. Holmes, a young doctor who, in a malign parody of the White City, built his “World’s Fair Hotel” just west of the fairgrounds.

Description
The inspiration for the five-part Amazon Original docuseries Ted Bundy: Falling for a Killer
This updated, expanded edition of The Phantom Prince, Elizabeth Kendall’s 1981 memoir detailing her six-year relationship with serial killer Ted Bundy, includes a new introduction and a new afterword by the author and a startling new chapter from the author’s daughter, Molly, who has not previously shared her story.
Bundy is one of the most notorious serial killers in American history and one of the most publicized to this day. However, very rarely do we hear from the women he left behind - the ones forgotten as mere footnotes in this tragedy.
The Phantom Prince chronicles Elizabeth Kendall’s intimate relationship with Ted Bundy and its eventual unraveling. As much as has been written about Bundy, it’s remarkable to hear the perspective of people who shared their daily lives with him for years. This gripping account presents a remarkable examination of a charismatic personality that masked unimaginable darkness.

More Details on the Story We Know
I was drawn to The Phantom Prince for several reasons. One, I heard the book was recently re-published again after many years of being out of print. Second, I was riveted to Amazon Video's Ted Bundy: Falling for a Killer (produced by Canadian Saloon Media / Blue Ant Studios) that used the book as its primary source. Hearing Elizabeth, in her own words and on camera for the first time, recall her story alongside her daughter, Molly, is indeed compelling and extraordinary. Molly speaks at the conclusion of the audible and it is interesting to hear her perspective and memories she has.
This audible is well produced and performed - I enjoyed Barrie Kreinik's voice - however the telling of the story itself can grate with frustration at times as you wonder how Elizabeth repeatedly forgave and stayed with Bundy. I felt sympathy for Elizabeth through her challenges as a young single mother who battled alcohol addiction and the constant stress of Bundy's manipulation, narcissism, and emotional abuse. While I did learn more about the story we all know unfortunately I came to no better understanding of it all and feel only tremendous grief for the families and victims.

Very insightful
I found learning of one facet of a complex human being.
Fascinating to read, through Ted's correspondence, the self-awareness he acknowledged, of his "base" feral nature, although he also possessed true empathy. His true nature, to me, is like that of pampered alpha male domestic cat. Charming, intelligent, playful and deadly.
I am very greatful that Elizabeth and Molly saw fit to share, in the most human way, very personal experiences so that those of us who are interested to comprehend what is human, can gain insight.
Thank you.

Listening to this story
I’ve always had a fascination with Ted Bundy for as long as I can remember. Watching the Netflix movie staring Zac Efron (who was incredibly convincing as Ted Bundy), watching the Ted Bundy tapes again on Netflix, to now listening to this story told by Liz and Molly. It’s hard to imagine while listening to this story everything that they had to go through living with him and even after he went to prison and his execution. I’m glad that I’ve only watched/listened to the things that he did. Overall a good story

loved it! originally had a PDF copy and flew through that one, so for the first time ever, I wanted to re-read a book and purchase it honestly to support Liz and Molly. The only chapter I question? Molly's Story. Don't believe it for a second.

Love the afterword
I love that Liz and Molly added new content to the end, while leaving in and commenting on the original edition, showing that growth and understanding take time and are imperfect, but that they don’t need to be hidden. I have so much admiration and love for them both.
